Princeton Review just released its list of top theatre colleges (among many other lists). Their list seems a bit odd. There are a few programs that should be on any Top 20 list that are absent, such as Rutgers, USC, and NYU. I am guessing that Juilliard and UNCDA are not included because they do not have a general collegiate curriculum.

CMU

Wagner College

Yale

Northwestern

Bennington

Indiana University

Ithaca College

Emerson

Drew University

Purchase

Muhlenberg College

Kenyon

Vassar

Sarah Lawrence

Elon

Stephens College

Illinois Wesleyan College

Hollins University

Skidmore College

Oberlin College

What criteria are they using? I think it may have been PR a few years ago that came out with a similar list (Wagner at 2nd? ) that was a pretty silly list, in many ways, but ended up being a survey of students about theatre at their schools and was a reflection of current student populations’ opinions on their own colleges shows.

Hhhhhhmmmmmmmm . . . Where is :

BU
UNCSA
Otterbien
Cal Arts
DePaul
Fordham
Hartt
Marymount Manhattan
Montclair
Pace
Rutgers
Syracuse
Florida State
Texas State
UCLA
University of Michigan
USC

For starters! I’m sure others could add other great programs. Sad that these lists don’t really give a realistic picture of theatre programs. I guess it would be a good place to start, though, if you were just beginning the search? Maybe?

Or maybe not. It turns out, the question that spawned this list was “How do you rate your college’s theater productions?”

Just as I thought.

Yes, Princeton Review has always been this way. It is like a poll of college students about various aspects of their respective colleges. In this case, it is asking about the theater productions/scene on campus. It really is not a rating by any criteria of the college theater major program at all.
