The general idea of this sentence struck a chord with me. A country becomes better as each of its members is reaching for his or her max potential. To the extent that artificial barriers are thrown up to bar certain groups from participation, the nation is weaker.

The US is a stronger nation for allowing minorities and women access to education, jobs, etc. And we could be even better if less discrimination existed.

The Muslims/Arabs hate the US simply because they have suffered much humiliation and jealousy.
Thomas Friedman in his book the world is flat summed up the concept nicely.

Arab hatred of the US/Israel/Jews is just a diversion from the problems in their own native country. The Arab despots need these diversions to keep their people from rebelling in angst. They are demagogues, following in the footsteps of countless tyrants who, in the past, usually ascribed all tragedies and evils to the same party, the jews and occasionally to other minorities.

tanonev, none of your grievances hold a candle to Pakistan's rape laws, which require FOUR eyewitnesses to ensure that the women was not merely having adultery and indeed was being raped, nevermind the fact that the men would never come forward, the men would get protection from other officials, and the police might even reciprocate by raping the accuser. I would take all the debauchery in the world over Pakistan's draconian rules. That's a rapist's paradise if I ever seen one. That's only one example. Sadly, circumstances like these abound in the muslim world.
