i had a very rough school year—various injuries, including one that resulted in a surgery. this wasn’t a major procedure, but it was very taxing on me—made me feel depressed and unmotivated to work hard in school :(. my gpa suffered greatly.

my freshman year gpa was approx a 3.89 unweighted. however, i only took 1 accel. course

my sophomore year gpa unweighted is a 3.67—i took 3 ap courses and 2 accel. courses. i bombed the final for one of my classes (dropped me to an overall B average), and finished AP microeconomics with a B overall (and 4 on the AP exam).math i didn’t fare very well in either, with a B+, and APUSH i got an A- (got a 5 on the AP exam).

i got a 2380 on the SAT and 780 on both US history and Math II. if my sophomore year gpa is above a 3.85, would i have a chance at these colleges?

i’d say i’m fairly involved in ECs—very involved in community service (leader of a group, coordinated various community events), sports, won a natl. competition regarding business/economics (would this offset my low micro grade?) amongst other activities

my school is very competitive as well, to put things in perspective. I’m also an asian-american, if that also affects my chances.

i’m very worried rn about my gpa—is there hope?

*whoops, meant "if my junior year gpa is above a 3.85 (unweighted), would i have a chance at these colleges?

i’m looking to major in econ, public policy, international relations, international business

There is hope… With that good of an SAT score it would overshadows the GPA. It’s still a reach, but you’ve got a decent shot.

^^ This is incorrect advice, Your SAT score will not overshadow your gpa. In fact, having a high standardized scores with a subpar gpa is often a red flag that the student doesn’t work up to their potential in school. That being said, you have another year to turn this around. Try to get straight A’s and also do not try to lean on excuses for why your grades slipped sophomore year. Colleges hate this unless you have a truly valid reason. Remember, they see kids all the time who face incredible challenges but manage to keep their academics up. That trait of perseverance is something that is of value to them.

With a strong junior year, you still have a shot so I wish you all the best!

If you Junior GPA is above 3.85, you accumulated GPA would be around 3.78. That would be marginal but within the mid 50 for these schools. Your test score is great and your GPA would be interpreted in the context of your school profile and course rigor. So you should give these schools a try although they have rather low admission rate. Just make sure you have some matches and a couple safety on the list.
