Printers

I really don't feel like going through the hassle of printers--buying one, maintaining it, and buying ink cartridges for it. Is this going to be a problem? Also, I'm really not very computer savvy so is it easy enough to connect a laptop and a printer somewhere in Butler so that I can print something?

u don't need your own printer at columbia....

the columbia printers are set up so that your documents are sent to them online so you would never have to physically connect to the printer. There are pretty thorough instructions on how to set your computer up to print to them and there are quite a few of them on campus. The printers however are known to crash frequently (though this has gotten better) but they are also typically in clusters (2 or 3 in the same room) so your best bet is to send your documents to all the printers in the room you'll be printing in and chances are at least one of them will be up and running.

Or you can just email the file to yourself or put it on a jump drive, and then go to one of the computer labs and pull the file up on the computers there for printing.

Honestly, in 2 years I can think of 2 times printers I have wanted to use have been down. Once in wallach (just walked over to hartley so no biggy) and once in EC (unfortunately both floors were down so had to go to wallach ~_~)

Their crashing is much less of a problem than the possibility of having them run out of paper (but this only happens when you REALLY need to print your paper, murphey's law and whatnot)

or rather it usually happens during the weekend when noone is around to add paper or change the toner

Unless you have the keys for the cabinet with the toner/paper. I never hard to wait.

Would you agree that using the University's printers is cheaper than using a personal laser printer? (I'm asking because these days laser printers are so cheap it's really tempting.)

something that's FREE tends to be cheaper ...so yes, using the university printers would be cheaper than having to pay for a printer and replacement cartridges. You get a quota of 100 pages per week, so it's highly unlikely that you would ever run out.

for those of you seriously keeping track....you are technically paying for your print quota since the university charges you a technology fee every semester...so since you are already paying for it, you might as well use it.

Thank you. I was assuming there was some sort of print account system.

Do we need to bribe someone if we need to exceed our quota, or what?

haha...you could...but you can also buy extra pages at 10 cents per page

as everyone likes to point out, 200 pages if u print double-sided. also, i think they upped this. i didn't pay attention to it but i remember one of the student councils proclaiming something about print quotas this past year and claiming it as a victory of some kind...

Actually, you could. It things haven't changed, anyone who works for CUIT can "sell" you pages and not take your money.

undergrads now have an additional 100 pages per semester "in reserve" which you would use if you exhaust your pages for the week.

they give you 100 sheets a week + 100 extra per semester so if one week you do 300 sides, 50 pages get deducted from your semesterly buffer. They might up the quota next year. I have never come close to going over 100 pages a week, people who do are usually printing out half a book that they don't want to read on a computer screen.

Do you work for CUIT? There was a script that you can run in cunix that I think was sellpages, and you just type in someone's uni and how many pages you want to give them.

"Do you work for CUIT?"

no, but i have friends that do, why do you? I've spoken to them about how to buy pages and about increasing quotas.

you buy pages online, the cuit kids have nothing to do with it anymore.

They never did have anything to do with it. Everyone just had access to the script. You could buy pages in person at 102 Philosophy, so that's why. And ya I did work for the previous incarnation.
