Bring a printer?

Printer = necessary? useful? helpful?

inkjet? low-end laser?

Thx

you definitely don't have to bring a printer if you don't want to. each dorm has a printer in the common room, and printing is free. when i visited duke, i asked my host if a printer was needed, and she said she had brought one, but it was just collecting dust on her desk. also, last weekend, i was at a duke get-together, and another current student advised against bringing a printer (for the first year, at least). he said using the dorm room printer meant you didn't have to worry about buying paper, which can get pretty expensive.

dorm room printers? are these new? Last year we didn't have those... but there are E-print stations in many convenient locations on campus. I'm not saying that they won't have them for next year... I just found out today that Giles has a pool table already. Now why won't the University throw money at us when we're actually at school? :)

Don't bring a printer if you live in Randolph, G-A, Blackwell, or Brown because thsoe are the dorms that have printers in the building...if you live close to one of those dorms, you could try to opt for walking there, but it might be more convenient to have your own printer. If you don't live next to one of those dorms, you should probably consider bringing your own just for convenience. I think those are the only 4 with e-print stations, but there could be another I'm forgetting. Oh, also there's one in Carr, which is right next to the bus stop. And in Lilly.

thre's no need for a printer. e-print is great. it's free and not too far away from anything. i had nor problems taking the 3 minute walk every now and then to print something up (especially when it was 200 pages of documents and it only tool 2 minutes on the printers at the e-print station).

Honestly, I lived in Jarvis (right next to Carr where there was an e-print), and I got so annoyed that I just bought a cheap, $25 printer over Christmas break. I used e-print to print really long documents and stuff, so that was nice, but when I went over there to print a paper and realized I forgot to print my spanish homework it got really annoying.

It didn't take long, but it was just a nuissance. I say if you have one in your building, don't get one, but if you don't seriously think about it.

i disagree. there were times when i got to eprint and forgot to send something. i just went on the computer in the lab (this was the brown e-print) and printed it again. it never took more than a minute or two to print up whatever i needed (thanks to blackboard).

My daughter did take a printer her freshman and sophomore years, but she rarely used it. I think it came in handy on a few occasions when the weather was really nasty and she didn't have to leave her dorm to print something. It seems that very few of the students have their own printers.

well, i guess im just lazy. like, i kill an obscene amount of trees printing like, 50 times a day so i guess it was worth it for me. Personal preference.

the trees are already dead...you're just putting them to good use! :-)

haha...good point.

The most annoying occurrence was when something seemed to have been sent to the printing system, and then I'd go over to print it out and it didn't work... or it would work but the printer itself would run out of paper or have a paper jam. Since I printed a lot of Word documents right from my computer, I would have to go back to my room and print it again, then find another e-print station. I think that it would make sense to have a printer for small documents (3 pages or less), but that you should use e-print for longer ones, such as research papers or readings for class.

i have a printer and love having one (but then again, mine works as a scanner and copier, so it definitely gets used one way or another by me or my friends). i print long documents from eprint (there was one downstairs from me in kilgo last year), but when i was printing papers or short assignments or job applications or whatever, having one in my room was just convenient for me.

My dad bought my laptop as part of package that included speakers, carry case, and among other things, a printer/scanner/copier. I'll be living in Brown next year, so is it worth it to bring my printer anyway? I kind of don't want it to go to waste...

it depends on your needs, if you'll be copying, scanning, and printing it's probably worth it - otherwise i would suggest eprint. 1 thing though, the eprint station in brown is connected through the building. there is a seperate enterance/exit from the outside. so if it is a nasty day and you don't want to go outside, you might enjoy having your own printer.

wow duke is so high tech!

i cant convince my parents that i dont need a printer though

you don't need a printer....eprint is the solution to all you your printing needs.

Yea, seriously. don't bring a printer! My roommate had one that he never used and it just sat there collecting dust. Most of what you are printing is long, sometimes upwards of 100 page readings/writings, etc. Do you want to sit there for an hour watching that print out on a little desktop printer?
