Printmaking and Sculpture programs

Just beginning this journey with DS who is a junior this year at a residential arts school where he is in a very rigorous visual arts program. (DD is a freshman this year at the University of South Carolina where she started out majoring in ballet - hence my username - but is now an exercise science major.) DS is very interested in printmaking and sculpture. How do we go about finding out what schools have strong programs in these areas? I am sure he will get good information and advice from his teachers, but as a mom, I would like to do some investigating as well. He will be attending the precollege program at SFAI this summer and is registered for Digital Animation and Screenprinting since those courses are not available at his school. I felt comfortable in guiding DD last year as I knew a good deal about different college dance programs, but feel completely lost in the realm of visual arts! Thanks all for your help!

Is he looking for an art school or a “full service” college/university with a good art department? (Or both?)

VCU has an excellent sculpture program.

We will be looking at both. Hoping and praying that there is more scholarship money for visual arts than there was for dance!

DS was very impressed with the Sculpture dept @ VCU. He’s not going to major in Sculpture otherwise he’d be going there this fall.

Peterson’s publishes a College Guide for Visual Arts Majors. Also recommend that you & your child attend the National Portfolio Day in your area next fall. Look up “National Portfolio Day” online to find the calendar for next year.

Thank you for the replies. DS will be attending NPD with his school. He attends the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts which has a very rigorous and well respected VA program. I did mention VCU to him and he is afraid it is too difficult to get in academically. While he is a decent student, he just isn’t at the top of his class and won’t have but a couple of AP classes and the first shot at the ACT wasn’t great…

DS isn’t close to top of his class and he got in with merit $$. Has not taken any AP classes but has done reasonably well academically at a very demanding h.s. Take a look at the profile of the avg student at VCU and see how his stats compare.
