Hey All,
From what I’ve heard generally, AP classes and SAT scores are what get your application “through the door”, and getting admitted is more up to your ECs, Essays, resume and how you present yourself in general with the rest of your application.
My school offers limited APs and virtually prohibits you from taking them your underclassmen years. With this in mind here are the APs I’m taking my junior year: AP Comp, APUSH, and AP Chem.
My senior year, I think I’m going to take four: AP Lit, AP Spanish, AP Calc AB, AP Bio or AP Stat
My first question is, is my foremost assumption correct?
And as someone who does NOT intend on being a STEM major, should I take AP Bio or AP Stat? I’ve heard colleges like to see two years of a hard lab science, but I’m not sure…
Also, if I could have some input on which subject (bio or stat) is harder in its AP form, that would be much appreciated.
Final question is, does my AP load look light? Should I bite the bullet and take 5 APs my senior year? Most kids at my school take one or two AP classes per year.
Thank you
Statistics is normally less difficult and less work than biology, and probably more useful for most students who do not need it for a major or general education requirement in college.
For science, have you had all of biology, chemistry, and physics (not necessarily AP level)?
Take as many APs as you are interested in and can do well in. If you overload yourself with 7 APs and get a lower GPA, it will look worse than 5 or 6 with a better GPA.
Your GC will send a school profile along with your application which will let the schools know that most students at your school take 2-4 APs or whatever it is. You’ll be compared to that context, not students from a school where it’s normal to take AP Human Geography as a freshman, etc.
Make sure you highlight the fact you couldn’t take AP’s till junior year in your brag sheet this way the GC can highlight it too
It’s actually pretty ambitious. See at the end of Jr year wrt AP Bio and AP stats - depending on how much work Jr year was, take AP Bio if 11 was fine, and stats if 11 was borderline too much.
Remember quality over quantity. At my school AP biology is difficult, its 2 class periods long. It really depends on your teacher if the class is difficult or not. AP stats at my school is easier than AP calc. Hope this is a little bit helpful in making your decision.
Also, if biology is interesting to you, take it. You probably don’t to take calc and stats your senior year if you don’t plan on majoring in STEM.
