Which kind of makes sense…
At this point CMU, and probably any college for that matter, knows that they got all the students they wanted, and that the rest wants them. So now it’s up to CMU to pick the highest bidders from the big crowd and profit…

So sad…
It’s like being a team captain in your gym class, quickly grabbing as many top athletes as possible, and then having to choose from the non-sporty kids. “Oh you want to be on my basketball team? 800 bucks and you’re in”.

My son is on the priority wait list for CMU as well. I honestly do not see it as a money grab, a bidding war or anything like that. You do not pay anything to remain on the list. The $800 – due only if admitted – is your enrollment deposit which demonstrates intent to attend.

We are kind of in limbo here atm… waiting for the CMU financial aid letter that is supposed to follow the admissions decision letter during the next week. DS’s second choice college has already offered him a $76,000 merit scholarship and another $40,000 in grant money, and has been wooing him with gifts and personal contact every few days. So he has a wonderful safety net already in place.

If the CMU financial aid turns out to be sufficient in terms of our need, then he will promptly submit his intention to remain on the priority wait list. He is working on composing his submission in the mean time. We are trying to look at it in a positive light – he was not rejected by any of the colleges he applied to, and being on the priority wait list for CMU simply means we won’t have a final decision until early May. It just pushes back his time line an additional month. It’s not over until the fat laddie plays the bagpipes.

;)

@MattJon14 I was able to check my financial aid for CMU online last night. I’m also on the priority wait list.

I am on the priority waiting list for CIT and would love to go but is there even a decent chance from the PWL to CIT. The numbers on http://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/pdf/cds_2013_14/c_firsttimefirstyearadmission.pdf only speak for regular waiting list and total admitted from that list. I am interested in knowing if it is possible to go from priority waiting list to CIT or if it is very unlikely. Thanks

Also does anyone know the number of students on the priority wait list. Thanks again!

If admitted from the priority waiting list, is it binding?

Also, I don’t see where we can submit our online written statement on the Waitlist Reply Form. Am I missing something?

It is not binding and you don’t have to pay. There is a link after you choose your status of remaining on the waitlist to lead you to the online written statement. Does anyone know about the chances though?

Anyone know if I get admitted through priority wait list and then pay the 800 deposit, can I still choose not to go? I know it sounds wired but that is my question.

You could pay the deposit and not go. I think its like that for any school.

I got off the priority waiting list last year (for MCS). I can tell you one thing for sure: the chances of getting off the waiting list vary from college to college. Dietrich, MCS, Tepper and CFA have much higher waitlist acceptance rates than SCS and CIT for example. But there’s always hope should you choose to accept a spot. You just have to make your application stand out.

Be sure to send them a “letter of interest”, which is basically another essay and use it tell CMU how badly you wanna get in. I was pretty darn emotional in mine so I think they buy that

Secondly, if you have some achievements or any other really good academic results (such as final school grades etc) that you didn’t send them before, send those too! It’ll make a much stronger case!

Good luck everyone! It was a tough one month of waiting for me so hopefully it’ll pay off for you as well!
