Private colleges want to reduce merit aid

Dietz, yes I know Ivies do not give merit aid. I am saying that they and a very few other schools are the only who can likely get away with the pricing. The schools even a small step down, not so likely imho.

So don’t have your kid apply to the Ivies. What’s the big deal? Plenty of great schools out there, it’s hardly necessary to apply there.

Why don’t Ivies give merit aid? The Stanford ad com mentioned this briefly during her spiel but I can’t recall their reasoning.

DD’14 is not interested in the Ivies, preferring small LACs, so it’s not an issue for us. Good thing, too, because there’s no way we’re paying $200K plus for an undergrad degree.

Have you tried net price calculators at various schools and verified that the net prices of various Ivies would indeed be higher than those of small LACs?

Beliavsky – We have looked at the net price calculators. Strangely it seems to be cheaper for her to attend Harvard than our local state flagship, but she’s not interested in the ivy college experience. Each of the schools she’s toured or is on her to do list claim to offer generous merit aid. Both our largest state school and university are on her list as well.

Agentninetynine–they don’t give merit because they don’t have to and because all the kids would qualify for that merit aid…

yes, the Ivy’s, if you can get into them, are the best deals around for most families.

Check Dickinson in PA if you want a good, smaller LAC that gives Ivylike financial aid.

Thanks for the recommendation, SteveMa. I wish I could get her to look past the west coast. Rice sounds like such a good fit for her, but since it’s in Houston, rather than Austin, that’s off the list.

We had planned an east coast tour for this March, but DD said she really isn’t interested in going to school in Boston, Rhode Island or NY. I think I’m the most disappointed as I love to travel.
