Looking for private colleges with good football and/or basketball teams for a kid with a 3.5uw gpa and 1400 SAT. We already have a list of public schools but hoping to add a few privates to the list. Full pay student. Doesn’t know what he wants to study, leaning towards communications or sports management.
Gonzaga? Villanova?
Zags and nova have good hoops but aren’t football powers.
Limited info.
Richmond has good sports for its size. It would be a reach but not out of the realm of possibility.
UMiami would be a target.
Tulane as a target.
SMU as a target.
Clemson as a likely.
He’s thinking of doing ED to either Miami or Syracuse (double legacy at SU) Loved them both when he visited. I think Miami more but he’s grown up with Syracuse parents so might lean that way. He’ll probably end up at an oos public (we’re in CA so not many in state options for him) but I keep wondering what privates I’m missing.
Not sports powerhouses. But Santa Clara and USD are awfully nice schools.
Not sure how I missed Cuse. Great option!
He’s adamant about the sports especially football. He wants the rah rah experience. I love U Denver. But lacrosse and hockey aren’t good enough for him, even though he follows those sports as well. He basically eats, sleeps and breathes sports and has since he was two years old.
U Miami, U San Diego, Hofstra, Furman, Fairleigh Dickinson, De Pauw? Not sure if these all have football, or his intended majors.
Wake Forest University in North Carolina may be of interest.
University of Washington (match),Boise St (safety) and Notre Dame (reach).
Wouldn’t Wake Forest and U Washington be super reaches? Boise St is on his list.
@Marcie123 Yes they would be big reaches and I don’t think that’s what the OP is looking for. UMiami is a great suggestion as is Syracuse. I’d also consider TCU. Beautiful campus, big time football / basketball / baseball. Went to a Thursday night football game this yr with a buddy visiting his daughter. Very cool atmosphere.
UW perhaps. ND Wake definitely. That’s why I didn’t add schools like those just because they have football and hoops.
Boise St is a public school. OP is looking for private schools as they already have several state school options.
Schools like depauw and furman a excellent small schools but there’s no high level athletics — other than golf at furman which isn’t really a spectator sport in college.
Oregon? Pitt? But then you say the Publics are covered.
Syracuse and Miami are good choices. Tulane, Tampa, Catholics schools like Boston College, Villanova, Fordham also some considerations. These range from matches to reaches. Wake Forest, Baylor, Tulsa , TCU, SMU are some more. Catholic schools are a good bet if you are looking football in a private setting. The public’s tend to dominate in numbers if you are looking for big football schools.
@Marcie123: Whether or not WFU is a reach probably depends upon your son’s class rank as a 1400 SAT score is fine. Needs to be in the top 25% of his graduating class.
Syracuse & Miami are reasonable targets.
Michigan State University should be considered.
@Publisher his school doesn’t rank but there are many kids with GPAs well over 4.0. I’m not sure he’s in the top 25%. I would doubt it. I’d say 15% of the class graduate with over 4.0 based on his sister’s year’s stats.
