I'm a junior in high school and I'm trying to get started with college stuff. I know about many of the public colleges around me with good programs, JMU, Longwood, VCU, UNCG. But I'm slightly more interested in the smaller colleges, I want to be able to really focus on my music, not a lot of people, and the attention I need from teachers. I'm not against conservatories but I would prefer liberal arts for undergrad.

Oberlin, Lawrence, Baldwin-Wallace and St. Olaf all come to mind as LACs with good music programs. I don’t know how good voice is specifically at any of those places but Oberlin is kind of like an Ivy Leaguer among music schools and the other three are all very good places, with St. Olaf being the only non-conservatory. The other three all allow you to do double degree programs between their colleges of liberal arts and their conservatories, if getting both a BM and a BA interests you.

I liked Sarah Lawrence when we visited. Music proff heard son in practice room and offered a private tour plus explained the music degree program in depth. Very much allows you to individualize your degree. S did not apply as he was not interested in LAC’s but I would have! (I know, I know… I’m not the one going).

Based on our tour though, two friends did apply.
PS: have no idea about VP there.

Valpo has a really great voice faculty, and it’s small (4000 undergrad and grad).

I thank you all for your input, I think ohio and minnesota might be farther than my parents want me to go, but they’re still options. Thank you.

Just to clarify, I mentioned Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and Squiggles was talking about Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, NY, both schools to check out.
