Another reason to maybe just focus on RPI as a “match” - a great school that’s realistic to get in.
CS in the college of science is a direct admit program. CSEE in the college of engineering has a secondary admissions process after freshman year.
Check out schools with small campuses.
I’d really focus on how he learns best and stays engaged. If he loses attention sitting and listening, a school with larger lecture classes, especially at the intro level, may not be good for him.
If he likes “doing”, Olin could be a great option. Rose Hulman and RIT both seem to be good for kids who do better in a more high touch environment.
Some kids will figure out how to thrive in any environment, but others will have notably better outcomes in a certain types of settings.
In that sense, it’s not about public or private, but style of teaching, size of classes, advising, etc.
Our engineering S with EF deficiencies and ADHD ended up at Quinnipiac. A big part of this was that they cap all classes at 24. They also have a strong support system. One of his classes is a Learning Strategies seminar. No credit, but helps with motivation, organization, study habits, etc. It’s just for engineering students and meets weekly. Their engineering program is somewhat new but we’ve been very impressed with what we’ve seen/heard. Many of the current parents of engineering students are themselves engineers and assessed it as the best choice for their children. That surprised me. Clarkson was on the short list for my S, but while they are a smaller school, their intro classes are very large. So it’s not just a small school vs big school issue. You have to look at class size and support programs, etc.
Seems like you are a fellow Big Red alum (judging from your other posts), and your kid is a double legacy like ours? Did you guys try CU? ED/RD? We are going to be be sort of in your footsteps. Any pointers? (Also part of me remembers the workload and is very scared … what if he gets in???)
Yep, Big Red alum, double legacy, D would have been third gen. I’ll private message you the details!
