Are private, and more expensive, schools generally better than state universities? What are the advantages of private schools once you get a degree from there? I want to major in advertising, does it really matter where i get my degree from? Are the extra money worth going to a private art school? The school i have in mind is academy of art university in San Francisco

depends on the caliber of the private. If you compare something like the University of Michigan to something like Tulane, then I would say that the Public is likely even better than the private.

However, if it's something like Michigan vs. columbia or Johns Hopkins, I would say that the privates would afford you the best opportunities for smaller seminars, more intimate settings, better name recognition, more money available, etc.

It's really up to you.

just for the record tulane is still a great school

yeah, tulane is a wonderful school.

it's just not up there with Michigan in most departments.

William & Mary is truly a unique place. Education of Amherst, prestige of Georgetown, history of Harvard, price of Va Tech. Class by itself.

Eh for the most part privates are better except for the scenario hope2 was talking about.

So for advertising the academy of art university is better than a state (san bernandino or sacramento)? The tuition is $700 per unit, is it worth it?

Most often privates are better at job placement also. That would be something I would look into if I were you. Plus, compare the colleges by looking at your out of pocket cost to attend. $700 per unit may be cheap if your financial aid at the school is good.

Look at UVa, WM, UNC Chap Hill, UCLA, UC Berkley.

UVA alone I think is ranked 23rd out of all public and private, so it beats hundreds of private schools.

I would completely disagree with country day and pigeon river. The sheer size of many large public universities can at times afford you research or study opportunities never possible at a LAC or small university, not to mention the better athletics, wider variety of students, and greater level of school spirit you would experience at publics (this is a HUGE generalization).
At the same time, the small size of privates can give you more face time with professors and make competition between students a bit less cutthroat (again, another HUGE generalization).

It's really up to you to decide where you fit in better.

ofcourse i prefer small class sizes and a good environment with friendly staff. I don't care much about athletics, fraternities and party schools. I want a more serious school that is worth the money (if it's private) and a degree that will be respected and accredited by that school. Help finding a job is a big plus also. Thing is i'm a 3.0 average, good standing student and i don't have a lot of money for high tuition. Which private schools would you recommend?

if both schools are small/middle/large size, I'd pick private though it has higher tuition cuz I think private one would provide me with more benefits

I wonder if retention rates are better at private universities. I know that the private college my wife works at has a special committee for "students of concern" to address the problems that ultimately lead to specific students dropping out. This may just be a result of their being a small school which is entirely dependent on tuition dollars, or it may be a common practice among private schools.
