Will the Navy still pay for your PRK/LASIK surgery if you are on a NROTC scholarship at a civilian college/university?
Thanks

My S is on NROTC scholarship and would like to have the surgery done too. It is his understanding that the Navy does not pay for it. He plans to wait and have it done after he graduates. Flight school is not in his future plans.

I am 99% certain that the Navy will not pay for ROTC students to have laser eye surgery. Midshipman at USNA are sent to Bethesda all the time for the surgery though. If someone wants the surgery simply wait until they are commissioned, they can then get it done at no cost. I would recommend waiting until after college anyway, your prescription is probably still changing and that's not a good thing if you want to go under the laser.

I also am about 99% sure, at least the way it was a year ago. So if you are a ROTC student planning to go aviation, wait and let the ROTC CO walk you through the procedures under the auspices of a Naval Flight Surgeon to ensure that you do not jeprodize your waiver requirement.

I can give you the Air Force version of things (I used to be a flight surgeon), which is pretty similar to the Navy's POV. Don't get LASIK or PRK if you think you want to go into aviation, I think that it is an automatic disqualifier, at least for becoming a pilot (not sure about NFOs). They are doing it for individuals on active duty. In the Air Force, air crew and "warfighter's" get priority, everyone else is on a space A basis. They will not do it, or any medical care unless you are doing your summer training, if you are in NROTC.

USNA69 and kp2001 both gave you good advice, you're better to wait until you are commisioned.

Search the postings for LASIK and PRK and you will find some additional information.
