Pro/cons of UNC?

What are your favorite things about UNC-chapel hill?

Emphasis on public service, the campus, the best friends I’ve made, the professors who have mentored me, the amazing students I’ve met, the community, the church I attend, the chance to study at the best university in North Carolina. Just to name a few.

Pros: Highly Ranked Medical program. Breath-taking campus. Nice Library. Best place for Jocks. EXTREMELY CHEAP for an amazing education

Cons: Not very diverse.

“Cons: Not very diverse.”

Seconded.

There have been several threads like this in the past… You might be able to find some more info a few pages back.

Pros: Cheap, somewhat prestigious depending on where you are in the country, great teachers, great classes, great campus attitude.
Cons: Too large (for me personally), not a very intellectual atmosphere (more of a focus on sports versus deep thinking and although there are pockets of this, it’s not as prevelent as an overall culture), horrible parking, south campus (lol), not very challenging.

Pros: strong academic offerings, high quality research, very qualified faculty, low tuition, eager and friendly students, great social scene, great athletics, perfect college town, beautiful campus.

Cons: I’ve met some, quite frankly, dumb students who tend to be from rural areas… however, most people I’ve met here by far are quite smart. I’ve heard some people complain about some of things ArtemisDea mentioned but a lot of those points are subjective. However, I take exception to UNC being called “not very challenging”… I, and most of the people I know, have worked very hard to achieve decent grades at UNC… all of my classes have required quite a bit of work.

I have yet to find an easy course at UNC, outside of LFIT of course.

Not very challenging? Give it another few years… ; -)

I suspect it depends on your major as to whether or not school is challenging. I had some frat buddies that struggled when they were business majors. When they changed to planning they made the Dean’s List. I just don’t see anyone attending UNC being dumb. Some kids just aren’t as worldly, but if you listen to them you might learn something. My son is not from the farm, but Sanford is not Raleigh. He’s got strong views on politics, sports, etc.

Okay, saying “dumb” is too harsh. I have met people in core classes who seem less intelligent… however, I guess it is pretty unfair to judge a person’s intellect when you barely know them. Also, people obviously come across as less smart when they are taking classes that don’t interest them.

I think its more fair to sum up UNC students as falling into four different groups:

Quite brilliant (OOS and in-state) students who are very ambitious and high-achieving.
People who are very, very smart but less hard-working.
People who less smart but very, very hard-working.
And students who are responsible and very knowledgable in a certain area of study… but who also like to have extra-curricular activities and good social lives (most students fall into this category).

Parents at CTOPS last week were told that the incoming Freshman Class of 2015 is “the smartest incoming class EVER in the history of UNC-CH.” As selective as Carolina is when it comes to admission, & looking at statistics of test scores, etc., I think it’s safe to say you won’t find many dummies there. Having said that, I’ve worked with some UNC grads who made me wonder how they made it. I mean…2 Biology majors who had never heard of “necrosis” or “necrotic” tissue? Chalk it up to things that make ya go hmmmm…

Well, as they say, there are dumb people everywhere… Even at UNC. I have heard the “not worldly” complaints from my OOS friends before. I think it can be a bit of an eye-opener for them to meet some kids from the boonies, but I think you can learn something from everybody at the end of the day. I also agree about the major factor - a Sociology major would obviously have an easier time of it than a Chemistry major.

Yea, I bet some of those “Worldly” folks would seem pretty foolish to “Boonie” folks if they spent a few days in the boonies.

All my friends are from the boonies… I’ll take boonie over worldly any day of the week! ; -)
