Pro/cons of washU?

What are your favorite/least favorite things about washu?

favorite things:
the people are amazing and down to earth, the food is great, the architecture is beautiful, the classes are interesting and challenging

least favorite things:
lots of pre-professionals (you probably get them everywhere, but theystill annoy me), most people can’t manage a half-decent philosophical conversation (as far as I’m concerned), people are generally apathetic (toward politics, student gov’t, etc.)

favorite things: interesting elective classes, challenging core classes, the people, my floor, social events, WILD, WUstock, watching student performances, the lovely spring days

least favorite things: the not so lovely weather days, that creepy bunny, that ursa’s closed on certain days, the mutant mantis men

Favorites:
Beautiful architecture / walkable campus, annual traditions, Forest Park, free metro passes, St Louis music scene, general culture of moving Wash U forward, student-focused administrators and professors (on the whole), far more variety in academic majors and divisions than most universities, ability to easily study in more than one discipline, wide variety of student groups, general culture of independence (i.e., not one thing really dominates campus life), Poli Sci and Econ depts, very laid-back academic culture for a top-tier college, going to college with students who love where they go to college

Least favorites:
The new dorms are far nicer than any college should have, lots of pre-meds but good luck finding a school without that unless you go to a LAC, the athletic complex is pretty outdated in stark contrast to everything else on campus

lol, I love how one of your disadvantages is that the dorms are TOO new/nice.

Most favorite- FOOD, dorms are beautiful, large amount of help available(cornerstone, tutors, study groups etc.), teachers are very approachable, beautiful campus, many places to chill and just relax, forest park, WILD

Least Favorite- coursework can be a bit stressful especially pre-med classes(aka weed-out classes), abnormal weather, some teachers can be a little apathetic, athletic complex is kinda small compared to other schools, drunk people during WILD

Overall WashU is an awesome school

Favorite:

 • supportive, very bright, and down-to-earth students
 • faculty and administration are also supportive, personable, and professional
 • challenging academics that really teach valuable information
 • impressive amount of research opportunities
 • beautiful campus, especially in the spring and summer
 • free public transportation passes
 • very nice library
 • very good financial aid, and the FA office is responsive to special situations
 • flexibility in choosing and declaring majors and schools
 • overall very laid-back and noncompetitive atmosphere (as flashmountain mentioned)
 • you will easily find people who party if you like to party and people who would rather not if you don’t
 • the world-class art museum and zoo, both of which offer free admission and are within walking distance of campus
 • Forest Park, a huge urban park across the street from campus, where lots of people like to jog, walk, or otherwise just relax and hang out with friends
 • some interesting amenities, such as Ursa’s, a night hangout place with gelato, crepes, ice cream, a hot chocolate bar (a dozen varieties of hot chocolate and five different flavors of whipped cream), and other food, and board games, TVs, frequent student performances, and movies

Least favorite:

 • the weird Midwest weather (can change drastically in a single day); hot and humid, cold and windy, snow, hail, sleet, rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, even earthquakes (not weather, I know) - you name it, we’ve got it
 • St. Louis isn’t the safest of cities
 • neither is it the most exciting (feeling of “been there, done that” in less than a year)
 • St. Louis is an odd, small, not-quite-metropolitan area in the middle of nowhere
 • you can get tired of the food pretty quickly, though it is very good
 • the cost of everything here

You cannot find a school without “cons” anywhere, but on the things that really matter - such as the strength of academics, quality of the students, beauty of the campus, general “warmth” of the atmosphere, quality of dorms and dining halls - I think that WashU is incredibly strong, and regard it as among the most desirable and impressive mid-size universities in the country.
By the way, I have no “vested interest” in WashU (I just can’t believe that neither of my kids chose to go there).

Pros-great advising, multicultural atmosphere, interesting classes, cool speakers (like the founder of Wikipedia) and pretty much what others have said.

Cons- stone age athletic complex, brilliant professors but some don’t know how to teach or test, snobby/overpriveleged kids(but you’ll probably find that anywhere), a lot of wasteful spending, high tuition and room/board, and “at times” artificial environmentalism. Trying your best isn’t always good enough. Premed exams are based on who can fail the least essentially.

The only thing I dont like about WashU is the damn name. Everyone thinks I go to school in DC or Seattle. This past week someone told me that the school’s name is “deliberately misleading.” Lol.

Washington University in St. Louis is also pretty long, people tune out the “in St. Louis” part. I kind’ve like the fact that the WashU name is still relatively unknown (yet growing in popularity); that the people who matter know WashU for what it really is is sufficient for me.

Hidden gem ftw.

Yes, agree about the tuning out! Whenever people ask me where I go to school, and I say, “Washington University in St. Louis,” I try to emphasize the “in St. Louis” part slightly without seeming impolite. Usually, their next question is: “Oh, is that in Seattle?”
