I have a full ride to college playing for a D1 competitive football (soccer) team (yes, i am a guy. I'm from England as well). However, i would also like to major in MecE, and as I have only moved to the states a couple of years ago, I had a few questions (I'm coming into this blind. Sorry!). Firstly, do I need to take an internship during the school year (I believe the term is co-op?), or can I just take one during the summer? Will this affect my chances at graduate school? I am able to afford going to the school, but just barely. Also, how important are the internships, and how often do I have to do them?

A full ride to college is a blessing for me. I'm new to this whole system, so I have had to do a lot of research. Any general information about engineering internships is helpful as I am clueless about them right now. Thankyou!

You definitely don’t need to do one during the school year - doing internships over the summer is just fine. You will need at least one (between junior and senior years), and a lot of people will have two or more.

And if money is tight, engineering internships (almost) always are paid, so you will have some extra income from those during the summers.

I don’t know much about research, but I would guess the same thing applies there as well. There are a lot of summer research opportunities. I would guess that the vast majority are during the summer.
