I am having trouble regarding math classes in high school. I am currently a high school senior, and I have maxed out on challenging math classes as of now. Junior year I took AP Calculus AB and received a 5 on the exam.
My problem is that I like math, but have no more math classes to take. I have the following two options:
Self-study Calculus BC and more advanced topics.
Seek out courses at a local community college/university and take math classes there.
The most appealing of the two options is the second. However, I do not know of any colleges nearby that would allow me to take classes. Additionally, I am quite poor and would not be able to afford to pay (much) tuition.
I live in lower Westchester County (a city called Yonkers) not too far away from the New York City. I would GREATLY appreciate any/all suggestions anyone has as to find, be admitted, and take local college classes as a resident of Westchester (or just advice in general!)
By taking the highest level available in your HS and doing well you should be fine in terms of college applications. Have you spoke to your guidance counselor to see if the school has any ideas? Many students in your position who want to continue a math class senior year will consider one of the following options: a) take a dual enrollment or a local/community college class b) take AP Statistics in HS or c) take an accredited online class (perhaps Calc BC).
I’d ask your guidance counselor to mention in his/her recommendation that you finished the highest level math class offered in your HS junior year.
If you do not know of any nearby community colleges, I would suggest taking an online math course from a CC in your state! You may need to commute a few times to take exams, however. Taking math online is a bit more challenging since it is more self-study than actual teaching, but it’s still manageable. Good luck!
