Professional Option: Medicine at UChicago

How difficult is it to get in the Professional Option Program in Medicine? This program, also called Acclerated Medical Scholar Program, enables a few students at UChicago to begin med school during their fourth year at the college so I guess it should be an extremely competitive program. Does anybody know how many people apply to this program each year and how many actually get in? Thanks!

Quick answer: very difficult. This is a highly competitive program that is made available to a very small number of students during their 3rd year at UChicago. Generally, about 1-2 students per year matriculate at Pritzker through the program. The small number comes from two sides-- Pritzker, UChicago’s medical school, has an incoming class of 88 students, which is a small class for a medical school and thus cannot accommodate a large number of entering students, and the program entry requirements are quite rigorous. This is not a program that a student needs to apply to before entering the College, and students who are not accepted through the accelerated option are still very successful in applying to medical schools including Pritzker.
