Hi, I was accepted into Carnegie Mellon and I am considering attending. I know this university is very math/science oriented, but I applied as a student very interested in English. In particular, I love writing and I absolutely loved reading about the Professional Writing major offered at this school. It looks to be exactly what I am looking for, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything (opinions, experiences, etc.) more about it? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One of my friends did a minor in technical writing to compliment her degree in materials science & engineering and said most of her classes were pretty good. I only remember her really complaining about one professor a lot, but other than that she seemed pretty happy with her decision to do the minor.

Can't really tell you much else since I was usually either holed up in a lab or computer cluster during my time at CMU. =p

D was in BHA, part of which was writing. Did not like CMU - very structured, limit class access...transferred to a school with self- designed interdisciplinary major and her course options are endless.

If it is the Pittsburgh area you want, take a look at the University of Pittsburgh professional writing program. I heard it is very good. Also, I heard that there is a cooperative arrangement between CMU and the University of Pittsburgh for classes. CMU's strength is in computer science and the drama/theater arts program. If you want to structure your interest in writing with the creative aspects of the other programs, maybe it is worth it. However, the tuition is very high at CMU.
