Professions/Majors that combines CS and Medical fields

PS: Access to grad school classes in biostatistics or epidemiology (in the U or via consortium) and proximity to a hospital are also factors to maybe consider.

If he can get in and you can afford it, I love the Biometry and Statistics program at Cornell.

Thanks for the suggestions on WPI and RPI. I searched threads that compare them. It seems like they are compared to Case western and Georgia tech quite often. We saw Case since DD got a sizable scholarship from them. DS was comfortable with Case when we visited. My impression was Case is stronger in medical field than CS. Will certainly research WPI and RPI more.

I like the idea of having CS as undergrad and then do medical fields in grad school. Never put it together like that in my head. But think about it, CS probably doesn’t need a grad degree ( DH has it so we know a bit more about it), and those Bio related degrees all seem to me are more suited for grad level.

@NoKillli The million dollar question is if he can get in

I secretly hope he will decide to do ED some where.

My son got his B.A. in Human Biology and an M.S. in Computer Science in a 5-year program at Stanford. He went into college as undeclared, but eventually decided to do something that combines these two fields. At one point he considered Bioinformatics, but decided that wasn’t the direction he wanted to take. He now works in the Medical Brain division at Google.

This sounds so cool!

My dd is a bioengineering grad student - did bioe for undergrad as well - her lab is focused on computational neuroscience, basically a CS/BioE blend.

My D is rising CS premed sophomore at Vandy. She has a summer research internship at Vandy, using MATLAB to program and analyze images of microtubules. She seems to like what she does and is able to provide good data to her PI.

My friend son just got in master program of biostat at Cornell and his college GPA is less than 3.5.

One of my dorm mates was like this…BS in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western. Then he got a PhD in Medical Engineering at MIT and is now is a Chief Engineer at GE Healthcare for PET scanners.

My S is a Bioinformatics major under the CS umbrella. It combines CS, Chem, and Biology. It is a good major if you are also pre-med.
