“A student stabbed a psychology professor to death on the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles on Friday in what was a personal dispute, authorities said”

Oh God…

And no mention of this on the USC homepage.

Homepage of what? Where is it supposed to be, on the admissions page? Do all colleges put crime on the website home page?

Many do, yes. Unless they are afraid that their image will be tarnished. Not even a RIP blurb.

^^ “Many??” proof please
I would like to see examples of the “many” other colleges putting the murder of a professor or student on their home pages.

I have never seen a crime report on the homepage of any school and plenty of others have had shootings/murder on campus. I didn’t see anything on the Ohio State campus website last week. Did UCLA put the recent shooting on their homepage, UIUC shooting in October, Tennessee State, University of South Carolina, Oregon, etc? And since USC always gets more press than anyone it seems on any event, good or bad, I don’t think they have to worry about their image being tarnished or hiding it. But USC is a school people love to dis, always figured it was a jealousy thing. This seems to have very little to do with USC as an educational institution.

A piano professor I studied under was murdered by one of her students, and it didn’t appear on the school’s website. I found out about it when I clicked on AOL’s homepage and it was one of the stories! So horrible. :frowning:

I did in fact see the story on the OSU home page. It was quite clear.

A USC professor, a USC grad student, in a USC building? seems that it had a lot to do with USC.

TSOBoston - Of course it relates to USC, I had edited while you were posting and added “as an educational institution” - I figured that was pretty clear but figured someone would take it too literally, just like I don’t think the driver has now ruined Ohio State for everyone.

@scotlandcalling

Who said that?

Most colleges don’t put this type of info on their websites. The last thing they want to do is draw attention to it. I am not at all surprised there is nothing on the website.

Very sad indeed, apparently the killer, David Jonathan Brown was a 28-year-old brain and cognitive science student, and Professor Bosco Tjan served as his mentor. Brown was on a leave of absence for the last semester for personal reasons the story says, so wasn’t on campus since last year. I seem to recall similiar circumstances happening recently where the student kills his mentor, but don’t remember where. Hard to comprehend. Sending kind and supportive thoughts to Professor Tjan’s family and students at USC…

The professor I studied piano under was murdered by a student she mentored. He was mentally ill. She had MS and the student helped her around her house. She knew he was ill but didn’t think he was a danger to her. You can google “Danielle Martin pianist” to see the story.

tomsrofboston,
still waiting for you to post examples of
“many” universities putting reports of murders on their home pages. :-w
having trouble finding them?

not surprised 8-|

@menloparkmom If you can tell me how to view a homepage as it appeared 1 year, 2 years, 5 years ago I will look them up for you.

I mentioned the recent OSU incident and Harvard was very up front about a murder in Kirkland House in 2009.

Universities focus on ways to communicate quickly with their students in emergencies. That is not changing their home page. In the LA times articles, students say they got texts from the university right away telling them which building to avoid and that this was not a more widespread or random campus emergency.

My son is on the contact list for our local UC since he takes dual enrollment classes there. He often receives texts and emails about issues on campus like possible gas leaks, suspicious packages, etc.

It is important to communicate in ways that will be received quickly. That means push communications like text messages. High schools, cities, etc do the same for important communications.

This is on USC website home page now.

My goodness, people. USC just experienced a horrific crime late Friday afternoon. Give them time to process what this means, let them be respectful to the victim’s family, fellow faculty members and his students. My D attends USC, and the school’s department of public safety immediately sent a text, and since then has reached out through email and social media to students and parents. I don’t think they were trying to hide or ignore anything by not immediately posting it on their website. This is a tragedy for the Trojan Family, @TomSrOfBoston. Be kind.

Agree, what a childish and petty thing to worry about. It is on the cover of every news page on the web and USC scrambled to make sure its students and faculty were taken care of on a weekend, which is their priority. Some just love to hate on the success of USC, even if it means kicking them when they are down.
