Professors/TAs at Rice

How good are Rice professors? About how many classes utilize TA's (6%?)? How do students feel about the accessibility of professors? How do you feel about having graduate students on campus and this affecting research and other opportunities?

bump. 10 char.

I am only in my freshman year and overall the professors have been good. Some were great, others not so, but the ones I seemed not to like are teaching classes that the material isn’t that interesting so that might have something to do with it. Only two of my classes have had TAs but I’m not in the large science classes that I know all do. Just my large psych classes have had them, and they just run review sessions and grade. The professor still teach. The profs are very accessible. On almost every syllabus office hours are listed along with the option of making an appointment. I have been to several of my profs offices and it is very helpful. Having grad students on campus I think helped at least me get into research. My psych lab has one professor and around five grad students, each doing their own project. Each of the grad students need undergrad help, so there is a lot more people and a lot more going on in the lab than if it was just the one prof doing one study. Hope this helps.

DD counts several profs as personal friends - though she has graduated, she is still in contact with them and has an invitation to visit one abroad this summer. And she will definitely stay with the other prof when she visits Houston this summer! DS will be working for and with a prof he really likes this summer and next year, doing research in his field. Although he is not as close to his profs as DD was, DS is a sophomore and has had plenty of professor contact. I’m sure he’ll have even more as he works and studies at Rice these next two years. Grad students are not a hinderance to getting opportunities to do research; the focus really is on undergrads at Rice.

almost every class (especially in science and engineering) has TA’s. They do not teach (unless the profesor is sick or something) and they lead discussion sections and assist in lab etc.
