Hello are there any service based programs similar to AmeriCorps with an educational award?
Cities of Service? http://citiesofservice.org/
But not sure what you mean by educational award…the $5k or so that some Americorps programs give upon completion?
Niece does FoodCorp which is off shoot of Americorp and will get around 12k for grad school after two years. Teach For America might do that. Google and see. Are you wanting programs for between HS and college or after college?
@OHMomof2 @scmom12 I forgot to clarify. Are there any of programs that are similar to but outside AmeriCorps?
I gather you want to stay in this country?
Are you a college graduate? teach for America is not part of Americorps. Another option would be the Peace Corps. Both require college degrees.
@thumper1 Can you be part of the peace corps and serve in the us? I thought peace corps is international only. Where does it say you need college degrees for both? I thought teach for America was part of AmeriCorps?
Jesuit Volunteer Corps
@wisteria100 does Jvc assist with tuition of some sort?
For volunteer members
Jumpstart for Children has education awards!
JVC has grad program scholarship opportunities
@wisteria100 is JVC part of AmeriCorps? Are there scholarship opportunities for undergrads?
@Syrxis I looked at the Website for jumpstart and it said that the program can help you with tuition via AmeriCorps or Federal Work Study. Through which one did you do? How does tuition assistance work in this case?
@speedygonzo335 They offer educational awards based on how many hours you commit to the program but you’d probably need to join through your college or local chapter. The lowest award is ~1.5k for 300 hrs of service over a school year.
A poster on CC last year was participating in a program at ASU where she got scholarship money and then had to complete a certain number of volunteer hours during the school year. It was a competitive program where she lived in a community (like an honors dorm)
What are you trying to accomplish? Why doesn’t Americorps work for you that you need something like it but not Americorps?
Are there any college honor societies that give its members financial aid?
Peace corps is international placement. They do accept applicants without college degrees but only with usable life skills.
I agree…what are you hoping to gain here. Are you a HS grad or a college grad?
We’ve had volunteers here as part of City Year, which I think is a gap year type thing…you might check into that. It is part of Americorp.
Why can’t the program be part of Americorps? This is directed to the OP.
Teach for America? Peace Corps?
