I heard about the Georgetown SFS program, researched it, and really liked it. The problem is, I'm not all that interested in Georgetown itself. Does anyone know of any programs similar to Georgetown's program?

Besides SFS, the premier professional schools of international affairs are Johns Hopkins’ Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, Columbia’s School of Public and International Affairs (SIPA) and the Fletcher School at Tufts. The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, while having a broader emphasis than just international affairs, is sometimes also included in that group. Unlike SFS, most of the others are only graduate programs–but you can major in international studies as an undergraduate at all of the universities I mentioned through their respective schools of arts and sciences–and all of them are excellent.

There are some professional schools which, like SFS, do admit undergraduates. Check out the Elliot School at GWU and the School for International Service at AU. These programs are generally considered a notch below the ones I mentioned before, but still very good. In my opinion, there is little to be gained by being an undergraduate at a professional school for international affairs compared to majoring in it at a top school of arts and sciences (or even a top LAC for that matter). Unlike business where, for example, an undergraduate degree from Wharton will carry you as far as most MBA’s–a master’s degree is pretty much
minimum requirement for all but research assistant type jobs. My advice, if you are interested in the field, is to get the best liberal arts education you can–and take a lot of political science (international relations is a subfield of political science), economics, and foreign languages. Work for a couple of years after graduation, and then go to one of the top professional graduate programs for a masters.

Seton Hall University has the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Affairs. I really don’t know anything about it to be honest, but if it interests you,
