Projected increase in applications and boost in selectivity

Last year saw an increase in the average (per appllicant) number of colleges that H.S. seniors applied to. Because of the growing anxiety among the parents and the students, it is expected that application number will rise further for the 2007 admissions.
As the number of applications increase, it is a mixed blessing for the colleges. The top schools can claim increases in selectvity by not increasing the acceptances commensurate with the increase in applications. They can be confident about required number enrolling. If not, they can call upon the reservists (=waiting list). However, the second and third tier schools have to take a risk by handing out more acceptances as they will be unsure about their yield projections. That is going damage their selectvity factor in the 2008 USNWR ranking.

By the way, I am applying to 10 schools. Some of my friends are applying to 3 or 4. That is a bit risky, I think.

I think 10 applications is a good number. Maybe 5 realistic reaches, 3 matches, and 2 reasonable safeties.

Not only are students applying to more schools but there will also be an increase in the number of graduating high school students next year.

man i'm glad i'm already in college
