Prominent Dean resigns from Texas university in the wake of campus carry gun law

I think if all the faculty and staff had walked out … that would have made a statement. As it is, one dean, no one cares enough to take much notice. I think ultimately the presence of so many guns will undermine freedom of speech and … remember it takes just one gun and one psycho to obliterate/scar the lives of hundreds (includes family and friends). This talk of how many is 1-2% is absurd. O’ that’s right psychos can’t buy guns.

And psychos don’t care much about getting a CHL or if a college has a prohibition against guns.

If all of the faculty walked out, how do you think the TEXAS state legislature would have responded? By rescinding the CHL law? Or by rescinding TENURE.

The blow back from the legislature would not have been pretty…

Hi @Gator88NE
I don’t know how the legislature would have responded. It seems highly unlikely that all faculty/staff would have walked out anyway. I was just making the point that one dean walking due to the new law seems inconsequential, probably not to him however.

The issue is complicated and becoming more so. This is a link to data on gun violence in the US in the first 2 months of 2016. http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/ The numbers are shocking. If we summed up, not just the number of victims over the past 10 years, but their families and friends, how many lives do you think have been obliterated and scared by gun violence? What kind of culture have we created? Who wants this? I can’t imagine any but those lacking empathy who wouldn’t welcome a solution to this madness.

This doesn’t happen in any other country that isn’t involved in a war or civil war.

I don’t believe that Americans are inherently more violent than citizens of other nations, we just have ‘the right to bear arms’ and thus there are a lot of people who own guns. Guns kill, terrorize and wound more efficiently. Globally, people become enraged, insane, vindictive, whatever the motive and attack others. If they have a weapon, they are more likely to cause serious harm. If that weapon is a gun, they are more likely to kill. People kill people with guns, but much less often with other weapons or with none.

This isn’t political for me. It’s an unspeakable tragedy. I deeply wish that we all could come together and have a dialogue toward a solution that doesn’t involve putting more guns in the hands of more people.

Advice given to professors at University of Houston:

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/02/24/u-houston-faculty-senate-suggests-changes-teaching-under-campus-carry

@garland , will they be adding:
-change curriculum for fear of getting shot.
-artificially raise grades for fear of getting shot.
-don’t engage anyone in any conversation for fear of getting shot.
-don’t look at someone the wrong way for fear of getting shot.

In all seriousness, I find the one about dropping topics from the curriculum to be most disturbing. That is tantamount to saying “don’t teach”.

oh please this is ridiculous, I read an article today where the kids have to keep the guns locked in their cars cuz they won’t be allowed in dorms. anyone ever hear of car break ins? may God help them all

What’s the big deal? So what people are carrying guns, and?

At Wyoming, guns are specifically NOT allowed to be stored in cars. They store them at the campus police station.
