UTAustin - Profs Sue to Ban Guns Inside Classes

With new gun law in effect soon, some professors are trying to concealed weapons from being brought into classrooms. Seems reasonable & private colleges in Texas can ban all guns. Are UT students & parents worried? What’s the mood on public U campuses in Texas - how will all this gun law angst affect prospective applicants?

Everyone getting used to guns in college classrooms?

There are more than 50,000 students at UT so the opinions really cannot be generalized. Some are very bothered and some are not. The law takes effect August 1.

Concealed carry has been legal in Texas for as long as most of those students have been alive. A concealed weapon is concealed and you don’t know who in a movie theater, grocery store or restaurant has a gun. It has always been legal to carry on the campus just not in the buildings (making it impractical to carry).

Because the law requires you to be 21 to carry, the majority of those carrying will be grad students/ faculty / non-traditional students.

And of course there are the usual arguments- if someone wants to murder, they don’t need a license to carry or a gun.

There is another thread from yesterday on this with a post from a current student.

I believe a compromise was reached in which you can carry in a classroom but not in a professor’s office.
