Prompt: "Why should you be awarded X scholarship?"

I am applying to a lot of local scholarships and their applications are pretty straightforward and easy. However, the essay that they require asks me to write why I think I should be awarded the scholarship.

I find this prompt to be rather vague; do they want us to write about something important to us or just give a laundry list of achievements? Help would be much appreciated

You need to look at each scholarship and see why it was established and what its purpose is, then explain how you are a match. For example, if scholarship is for low income students who have been involved in sports while maintaining high grades, you would discuss your family’s financial issues, your sport, and your academic achievement. If you can’t find any such criteria, you’ll have to write more generally about yourself–but the identity of the awarding organization may give you a clue about what they are looking for. Chances are a service organization like the Rotary will be impressed by service to the community. You should also include something about your goals in college and beyond (intended major, planned career) and how the scholarship would help you to achieve them. Good luck!
