PROs and CONs of MIT....Just curious

Do you know anything really amazing about MIT that a lot of people don't know about or anything really not so good that people generaly don't know about? I'm just curious as the title suggests. lol

pros: everything

cons: having to tutor the ■■■■■■■■ Harvard students

LOL @ pigs post :P.

pigs, just curious… will you be attending MIT?

Yes. I like to bring this up a lot because it’s one of the big things I’d wished I’d known about when I was applying to colleges - internships, internships, internships! MIT has amazing internship opportunities - every year, recruiters pretty much flood the campus looking for students, and they make the application process as easy as possible (of course, it’s still competitive). Also, there are tons of company info sessions, year round. If/when you visit campus, make sure to ask a few current students what they did with their summers - pretty much everybody here does something awesome. I know people who have worked at Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, Cisco, IBM, Boeing, etc. and these are all undergrads. And then, of course, there are the summer UROP opportunities, and the MISTI program (MIT helps you find an internship placement abroad), and all other kinds of cool stuff.

The same sort of recruiting happens when you’re looking for full-time jobs, too. :-)

MIT’s sailing pavilion is just a few steps away from many of the dorms. You can learn to sail on the Charles River. You can join a sailing team after a year or so of lessons.

MIT’s sports are among the most accessible in the country. I remember being on the campus a couple of years ago and learning that the crew teams were recruiting “anyone interested in crew.” Do it! Beat Harvard!

Californians: You can take ice-skating lessons to fulfill one of your PE requirements.

Debate: MIT doesn’t usually come to mind when you think of nationally recognized debate teams, but they won this year. You could join.

Ballroom dancing: Ditto this, frankly. And yet MIT has had a very lively ballroom group over the past years.

During the winter, the Snow Riders group takes students up to the mountains for skiing and snowboarding at really reasonable rates. If you’ve never done it, college is definitely the time to try.

MIT has outstanding workshops – metal, wood, electronics, you name it – open at all hours to students interested in building stuff. You can build your own camera, from scratch. (There’s a guest blog by a young woman who did this, but I’m too lazy to look it up…)

This little list is hardly even 1/100th of the tip of the iceberg at MIT. Really.
