My son was accepted and is pre-med. Will major most likely in biology. I am wondering what pros and cons are of academics, social life, campus life. From Minnesota and hope to visit the campus soon.

Judyjim…my D is a freshman at UVM and while it was not her first choice she has been beyond happy with the school. I recently asked her if she wished she had gone to any other school and she said “Absolutely not…I love UVM!” She has been challenged academically (and she came from a very academic private hs), she has an incredible social life (she does not even want to come home for visits) and says there is so much to do at UVM.
The campus is beautiful, the town of Burlington is a great college town. Hope you get to visit soon!

Jilliebean, Such good news. His heart was broken when his number one college waitlisted him. We may go visit Vermont next week. I am hoping he will feel better once he sees the campus etc. Thank-you.

5-10 kids a year go to UVM from my kids high school … and they are vitually all VERY happy with their UVM experience. They love Burlington as a college town (and the Vermont setting) … have been prettty happy with the academics … and for a state school it is relatively small (10k). The one negative for some is the weather … fall and spring are both offset from even Boston weather by quite a bit … not a great choice for someone who does not like the cold or the winter (and a great place for those who like four seasons).

(Full disclosure … I’ve spent a lot of time in Burlington (and have considered moving there) … and UVM is on SecondToGos short list for his 5/1 decision)

My D did an overnight visit at the honors college Sunday night and she loved it.

It looks like it may come down to UConn and UVm . Anybody else have that choice?

Judyjim…my D was also waitlisted from her #1 last year and was heartbroken but now says she could not even imagine herself there. UVM, it turns out, was and is the perfect school for her! Hope your son finds a school that he feels the same way about…hopefully it’s UVM!!

My son attended the UVM accepted student day this past Monday … and about 1/2 way through the tour without talking to SecondToGo I called Mom3ToGo and told her … this is the place; if SecondToGo does not pick UVM I’m disowning him … then as soon as we finished the tour he told me UVM was his choice!

We need feedback on Elon University versus UVM! Down to the wire. My son loved BOTH schools but wondering if Elon is a bit “preppy” and if UVM is a bit “crunchy”? More than that, he doesn’t mind the cold but is not a huge skiier and really LOVES sports like lacrosse, basketball, football, soccer, rugby, etc. Elon has great club sports.

Seems like UVM is mostly skiing and snowboarding (for leisure sports).
Worried that kids at Elon are super “straight” and conservative???
is there a nice mix of “types” at Elon?
LOVED the weather in NC.

We welcome comments!

My son is a sophomore at UVM and absolutely loves it. He laughs when someone calls the students at UVM “granola like”. His reply is they are a bunch of upper middle class kids like me. Who else could afford to go here! He does like to ski, but he also plays on the ultimate frisbee team and participates in many club sports, such as volleyball, dodgeball, soccer, etc. . . Great club sports at UVM. He has many friends who don’t ski, but enjoy the many other activities Burlington has to offer. Great hiking, biking, etc. … You will definitely find a mix of kids there.

Based on my experience at UVM:

Pros:
Many course options, majors
Burlington is great
Themed housing
Beautiful area

Cons:
Poor advising
Large classes
cold weather
social life is nearly all off-campus
lots of drugs
apathetic students

complete OPPOSITE description at Elon!!

maryqueen: what did your son decide?

I see this is an older post,my d has same choice: uvm vs uconn, engineering both. Any insights?? Cost is DEF a BIG factor!

Can’t speak specifically about Engineering but UVM has been incredible for my daugher, a rising junior. Many opportunities to succeed as far as scholarships and recognition. My daughter will be living in Burlington this summer conducting her own research through a Simons research grant. She will have advisor as well to make sure she is heading in the right direction. She is given a stipend that pays for her rent, food, travel and misc expenses. She will also be working under her History professor doing independent paid research in a field that she loves. She was awarded 2 scholarships this Spring and has been set upon a path for National scholarships through the Honors college. She has made great friends and has grown beyond our expectations. UVM has been an amazing place in so many ways. If you are willing to work and apply yourself, UVM will support you in fulfilling your goals. It is funny because she applied there on a fluke. She had intended on going to school in DC or Boston.
