Pros and Cons to a Trimester vs Semester schedule

Thanks keepingcalm....I just think I have more of a unique situation than I thought. It is a shame to let all of that academic knowledge in the sciences and the love and drive to "save the environment" go to waste, but I also hear what everyone is saying. "You can't have your cake and eat it too"!!
At least not a BFA and an engineering degree. My son is going to have to do some real "soul searching" before we actually enter this process. I will do my best to give encouragement and let him make the choices. Only HE can know what drives him, makes him happy, gives him peace, etc. etc. and I just hope that there is a program out there that will speak to him. Oh, I should have known that my first 2 son's were WAY TOO EASY!!!

britbrat - James Madison University in Virginia has a new school of engineering that is getting lots of attention. They also are offering the first concentration in Sustainability - a joint effort by the School of Business, the College of Integrated Science and Technology and the School of Engineering. They also have excellent music and theater programs and offer a BA in MT. My daughter will be there in the fall working towards her BM in vocal performance.

JMU - Sustainability

Thanks, I will put it on my list to research. I have also found that Penn State offers a BS called "Energy Engineering" and they have a BA in MT, so we might be getting closer :)

The JMU option seems very worth looking into in my opinion.

Penn State does NOT offer a BA in MT. They have a BFA in MT. There is a BA in Theater there, but not MT.

Sorry, my mistake. It was on the same page with the BFA

I am doubtful about combining the BFA in MT and engineering at Penn State but likely you could combine the BA in theater with the engineering there. However, if my kid was into MT, I would not want to do the BA at PSU because he will be very much second fiddle to the BFA in MT majors there and I would prefer an engineering school where the BA Theater program is not competing with the BFA one. Thus, I would pick JMU over PSU if wanting this combo of degrees.

Has your son looked at Northwestern? I suggest he take a look.

Have you looked at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University? They even have a concentration in Sustainable Development. Indiana also has an Individualized BA major in MT (besides its BFA in MT).

Vassar has Environmental Studies and Drama. They put on Merrily We Roll Along this past spring. :D

And a plug for my alma mater....Tufts University which has a Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a good Dept. of Drama. Great a capella there and they put on musicals. And if he doesn't want the engineering program there in Environmental Engineering, they also have an Environmental Studies Program. There is also a student run group that puts on musicals....it is called Torn Ticket. Lots of dance in the dance department too.

britbrat -- I coordinate the MT program at JMU. I am opening a show this Wednesday, but I can do a little research into the ability to combine the BA in MT with the Engineering degree.
