Current students, what do you guys like and dont like about CMU?

Pros-
1. everyone here will have an awesome job when they graduate

Cons-
1. nonexistent social life. seriously, if youre trying to go out on weeknights/have multiple things to do on weekends, this is not the place for you.
2. crappy weather
3. crappy food
4. some departments are VERY blatantly favored. if you're coming for engineering/compsci/art it's awesome. h&ss, you might as well be at some random decent school.
5. ridiculous workload.

it all depends what you're looking for. if your goal is academics and an awesome job, definitely come here- everything else is worth it, because you'll be so far above everyone else by the time you graduate. if you're looking for the usual college experience with lots of fun, i wouldn't even think about it, because while you can make friends and entertain yourself when needed, its really not the mentality of the place.

geb90-would your comment for H&SS hold true for the Information Systems major?
What do fellow students tell you about IS?

For my son:

Pro:
Top com sci program.
No feeling of being left out if you aren't interested in drinking and partying on weekends.
Challenging work.
Potential for job placement.

Con:
food
weather

Pros:
Top unmatched job placement and networking
Traditional green campus on hill while maintaining an urban feel (just 5 min away)
Easy accessibility to everything
2nd largest college city (many college students and Upitt down the street)
Amazing internships and research opportunities
Friendly and intelligent professors (individual focus)
Social life has something for everyone (Greek dominated which may be good or bad)

Cons:
Poor sports
Sporadic weather

haha, maybe it is just because I have grown up on frozen dinners/school lunches and/or pb+j, but I actually thought the food i had on campus during my sleeping bag weekend was great. Sandwich + Fruit from Ginger's >>> Same burrito every day for four years in high school cafeteria.

I doubt you were paying $7 for that burrito, though.

Geb90 is ridiculous, HSS is obviously not as good as comp sci at CMU, but its far from a joke. It's psych and econ departments are both highy ranked programs with serious career opportunites after graduation and I believe the creative writing program is the real deal too.

Also, what geb said about the social life is a joke. If youre interested in a socil life at CMU and have any social ability something is always available. Im a frehman right now and pledged a frat for likea month or two, and there were always social opportunities through that. I ended up depledging because the work that went with it wast worth it for the parties. Theres also a lot of opprtunities if you are on a ports team or make friends with kids on spots teams cause they have house parties almost every weekend night, nd thats how ive spent most of the weekends here since i depledged. The other simple option is going into pitt down oakland ave or atwood or one of the other streets off forbes. Theres alway tons of open prties available to anyone willing to put themsles out there. This is what im doin tonight and prolly do like twice a month when theres nothing on our campus i want to do. Theres really more options than you need here for social **** or parties and whatnot if youre willing to step up and meet people.

IS is amazing. We have the technical abilities of the CS majors and the social skills of the business majors.

Truthfully though, the IS program benefits from the awesome CS department and the awesome Business department. It is a pretty unique program and one of the top in the nation. Why it's in H&SS at all is beyond me, though.

I can't answer for S but he was in a fraternity and had a great time (and a gf at Pitt). Oh, and they had their own cook, a good one, so that solved the food problem.

Son said:
Weather not that bad. Just like western Oregon. Wet winter, spectacular Spring.
Food searches led his group all over Pittsburgh. Best food hunt is Toronto.
With all the performing arts at CMU, he only saw a handful.

seriously, geb90? did you like live under a rock or are you comparing it to a college like penn state or upitt? cuz seriously, any school in pittsburgh has good attractions. and you can def hang out if you can find some friends. well I guess it's possible to not have that many, considering cmu has a lot of international kids, mostly from korea. so naturally it's very hard to communicate with them.
