Hey everyone. I just started freshman year at Indiana University at Bloomington. I was initially admitted for Finance but after thinking hard about life after college, I have settled on Computer Science. I really want to transfer to GaTech’s CS program after my freshman year here. Below is an outline of my classes and I would appreciate some tips and honest feedback about transferring into GaTech’s CS program.
I have credits for English Composition 1 and Calculus 1 from high school.
Semester 1:
Calculus 2
Physics 1
Intro to Com Science
Intro to Micro Econs
Semester 2:
Calculus 3
Physics 2
Eng Comp 2
Intro to Software Systems
Either: Intro to CS discrete math OR Intro to Macro Econs
These classes meet the transfer requirements on GaTech’s transfer table. I plan to submit my application during the Feb 2020 - June 2020 window and hopefully attend GaTech by Fall 2020. I would have a total of 42 credits by the end of Freshman year (June 2020).
Other than academics, I plan to join the Computer Science club here at IU and other CS-related activities.
I’m an international student btw, if GaTech takes that into consideration. And I understand that I will not be receiving any financial aid from GaTech.
You must take linear algebra to get into GaTech’s CS program as a transfer student. Try to take discrete mathematics as a freshman too. Look at the social science requirements too, and take physics and calculus as you plan to. You need to either have AP English credits, and English 2 type class, or take English 1 and 2 in the freshman year, so two writing classes are required to transfer into GaTech, but call them to be sure. GaTech requires a freshman health and wellness class, not sure if that will transfer though, so ask them, if thats necessary. Also what about lab sciences? Be sure the physics will count as the lab science, I think it will. Does your physics 1 and 2 classes have a lab? Do you have any AP credits? GaTech will accept those too, I believe, but check on that for transfer students. So Calculus 1, it seems you got credit from a high school class?
Also go to the website and look up the classes you are taking to see if GaTech will transfer the credits. Since so many people transfer into GaTech they have a helpful website where you type in Indiana U and the class number and it will tell you how many credits you will get at GaTech.
As long as you can pay cash for GaTech, I don’t think being an international student matters. You may need to prove that you have enough money for 4 years. All out of state students who are not veterans children or one of the tiny minority that win in state tuition, are paying full cash for GaTech. Its still $80K less than MIT and other privates so an absolutely fantastic deal. Class sizes are small at GaTech, but Computer science is a tad overcrowded. You should look at the CS thread curriculum and figure out if that will work for you. You have to pick two specializations to earn a CS degree at GaTech. The thread specializations keep the class sizes smaller at GaTech than some other public CS programs.
Also apply to UIUC CS, as its very similar to GaTech’s program and also accepts lots of transfer students. They are very similar programs. Maybe also look at U of Maryland and Purdue.
