Prospective Grinnell student

I recently got accepted to Grinnell early write. I am very interested in the school and will be visiting in April, but I was wondering if anyone could share inside information about Grinnell. I am also considering Colgate, Hamilton, and Vassar(I have not hear back from these 3 yet), and I was wondering how you guys think these schools compare to Grinnell academically, socially, and in terms of prestiege.
My parents and I were very excited about my Grinnell acceptance, but so far I have observed that very few people around upstate New York even know what it is.... I would hope that this is not true in the academic community?

the people at CC will know what Grinnell is and tend to think of it as a very good LAC comparable to or better than the schools you list. I cannot speak specifically to how isolated it is in comparison to your other three because I haven’t been to Grinnell altho I know that stretch of Interstte 80, but if I had a chance to do some downhill skiing in the winter, trout fishing in the spring and fall, live where there are mountains and trees and pasture, I’d choose one of the three instead. But who are you and what do you like in the way of proximity to urban resources or outdoor life or, even, academic life? Where are you going to fit in best?

We always preface answers by saying “our son attends school in Iowa, at Grinnell College,” because otherwise, people think we’re saying “Cornell.” Grinnell is terrific, well known and respected by people who know LACs, and offers as engaging an academic and intellectual environment as any school out there! If you’re talking grad school, then there’s absolutely nothing to worry about! Plenty to do on campus, so social environment is fine. A great bunch of unpretentious, friendly, intelligent kids who really delight in intellectual pursuits, supporting the passions and unusual interests of their friends.

I should add this: we’re also from the East Coast, and most people just smile politely when they hear where he goes, but those who have heard of it are really impressed! With these LACs, it is all relative in terms of “person on the street” awareness. Personally, I’m really glad (and so is my son) that he is experiencing a different part of the country, and for an LAC, Grinnell has a great deal of diversity, which is a nice thing.

@SDoncc for your son, what seperated Grinnell from other colleges?
