Prospective Medical Student (Michigan)

I am a Senior in high school from Michigan and I need some help making a decision. I really, ultimately want to become a physician in a hospital but that is a really long path. My plan is to major in Computer Science, but at the same time take a biology-heavy course;pad (as well as premed requirements obviously) so that I am prepped for MedSchool.

My stats:

4.0 GPA Cumulative so far
ACT - 32 Composite (27 red, 32 eng, 34 math, 36 science)
AP - Bio 5, World History 4

I'm concerned about scholarships as well since I'm going to have to pay for most of my education myself. I'm hoping to get decent scholarships from some colleges and my parents can help pay probably a few thousand each year.

My current list of colleges to apply to:
U of M Ann Arbor
U of M Dearborn
MSU
Wayne State
Oakland University

I don't really care how good the medschool that I will attend is, but I'm aiming for at least a decent MD school. At that time, of course, I will be taking out federal stafford loans as medschool is really expensive, but at the same time I don't want to take out any loans for my undergrad since that may create problems when I apply to medschool.

Any ideas which colleges could guarantee me acceptance to a decent medschool, that are not too expensive or good with giving out scholarships. Currently, U of M Dearborn seems to be the best candidate with the Chancellor's Scholarship which includes full tuition and only requires 3.9 GPA, 31 ACT.

Thank you for your time and sorry for this long post.

I think you can aim a little higher, like MSU or Wayne State (if that's considered higher). I live in Michigan too, and a lot of the medical field applicants got GREAT scholarship from MSU. That sounds like a great fit for you. While the scholarship may not be guaranteed, it's pretty likely that you'll get most (if not all) of your expenses paid for if you write a decent essay. Good luck.

Yeah, my biggest problem is a good essay, but I'll try to get help from my more English-loving friends with that. If possible, could you elaborate more on what kinds of scholarships people get from MSU and how difficult they are to attain? My friend got into their Med program which guaranteed acceptance into their MedSchool without MCAT, but unfortunately they ceased that program this year :(

Thanks a lot for the info!

Okay, I'll probably have to contact them tonight, though. Facebook, here I come.

Thank you so much and have fun with facebook ;)

Bump. Anyone else, help?

My plan now is to go to Wayne if i get into the MedStart program, MSU if I get good scholarships, and then probably Wayne or MSU for medschool depending on acceptance since their MCAT averages aren't too amazing.

I would say Medstart would be your best bet if you can get in. UM Dearborn would be on the bottom of my list (I'd get rid of Oakland all together). MSU is really underrated for premed and you'd do excellent there as well. Just out of curiosity, why is UMich AA so far down? Don't get me wrong, I think MSU or Wayne would be better, but most people are all for UM AA.

Just the monetary issue. I don't know if I would want to get loans in Undergrad as that could pose some issues when I try to get Stafford loans for medschool. Otherwise, UofM AA would be my #1 choice. MSU seems to have some better opportunities for scholarships, but I'm uncertain I would get substantial amounts. The reason Dearborn is on the list is because of their relatively good average ACT/GPA scores. Their ACT averages 21-26 while Wayne Undergrad is like 18-23. But now, I've changed my plans a bit and here's how I prioritize my list now:

1: Medstart @ Wayne State

2: Substantial scholarships at UofM AA

3: Substantial scholarships at MSU

4: Presidential Scholarship @ Wayne State

5: Chancellor's Scholarship @ UofM D

6: UofM AA Regular Tuition/Boarding

Any other ideas?

Your best bet at med school in Michigan is attending either UM AA, MSU, or Wayne State. Any one of these schools will get you into a good med school, especially if you want to stay in Michigan for medicine. Get rid of UM-Dearborn, although it may have a higher ACT average, they have a shaky track record of getting students into med school, and there is little to do in terms of research, hospital volunteering, etc.

If you want to know any specifics about med school, please let me know. I would be more than happy to fill you in.

By the way, OU is opening med school in 2010 so if I go there (plus I have an alumni relative) and do well I have a decent chance.. cause OU is technically better than Wayne just less developed.

OU is "technically" better than WSU? What does that mean?

I' m judging by the average ACT scores/GPA and also Rochester Hills is nicer to live in/drive to than Detroit safety wise. There's also more things you can do in Rochester Hills.

Wayne:
ACT: ~20.5
GPA: >=3.25 42%

Oakland:
ACT: ~21.5
GPA: >=3.25 50%

Also more women in Oakland lol. (obviously kidding about it being a decision factor)

http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/servlet/createpdf?collegeId=1776&app=CollegeSearch

More things to do in Rochester Hills than in the Detroit cultural center? You have got to be joking. The area right around WSU is pretty safe.

Both OU and Wayne State are heavy commuter schools. I agree that there is probably more to do in Rochester for an average college student. I like the OU campus better, but that's just my personal opinion. You can't even guarentee the med school program at OU, though. It will technicially be starting in 2010, but they will still have to get certification, which can be iffy. I would suggest Wayne States more established med school over the OU program.

The two schools you should be considering in Michigan is Michigan State University and University of Michigan- Ann Arbor.
( Also plan to be a doctor)

Since it seems like you have done a lot of research on these universities. Can you rank the universities you've listed by their pre-med program, and another for medical school?
Thanks
