Hi all. I’m a prospective transfer student for Princeton’s new transfer program. I was wondering if any of you could shed any light as to how to improve my application, or if I should even try at all, as I read in the Princeton Alumni weekly that they will only be admitting 12 transfer students. (Yikes.)
I had okay grades (3.3 UW, 3.6 W) in high school, and I went to a very difficult prep school. I’m about to finish my first semester of community college with a 4.0, and I hope to keep it up next semester. My ACT is a 30, but I’m retaking it in December. I’m aiming for a 36 obviously, but am really hoping to get at least a 33 to “meet the standards”.
In high school, I was the editor of the literary magazine that was released annually, and I was VP of our school’s LGBTQ club. I also played varsity hockey and did varsity sailing (I’ve been competitively sailing since I was 9). In college, I am the secretary of the literary magazine, and I have an internship at the State Representative’s office 3 days a week. I want to be a lawyer, and this past summer I held a job for 10 weeks at a local law firm, and I really enjoyed it.
A hook, if any, is that only my mother has a college degree (from U of M), and my father barely got his high school degree. He is also a type-1 diabetic, and I have helped to take care of him from a young age. As a result, I also babysit several kids with type-1 diabetes. I know it doesn’t really connect to my dreams of being a lawyer, but it is a part of my life.
I guess I want to know if it is even worth it to try. I read that they want community college students, so I’m working really hard to be at the top of the community college heap. If it helps, my community college is about 40 minutes from Princeton, and is well regarded, sending transfers often to Cornell, Columbia, and Penn.
Any advice on my app or words of wisdom or someone telling me it’s not worth it and that I’m crazy, will be appreciated.
