Prospective transfer for fall'11

I apologize if any of my questions were answered in the FAQ in this forum, I looked but didn't really find what I was looking for.

So I'm currently a senior in H.S. who didn't do too well and got rejected from all of his top choices (you know the story) and plan to transfer from Florida International University after a year (maybe sooner, depends on the school I think). My ultimate goal is to transfer to a school like NYU but I hear they are very reluctant to hand out financial aid, and being that I come from a low income family I might have to shop for similar but more generous universities.

Anyway, I figured I'd prepare for the upcoming first year of college by asking you guys what things I should do to make my transfer application strong in hopes that my HS record might be looked at less. I'm aware of the obvious like GPA and teacher recommendations, etc. I've read that starting a club or becoming president of a club is a deal breaker for many colleges, is that true? And if so, what kind of club should I start? Has to be more than a book club or something, right?

And since no thread is complete without stats:
Dismal high school stats that I'm better than
3.4 (weighted, not counting the marking period before break), 2.3 (UW, same as <--)
ACT 26 (Could I retake as a freshman in college)
SAT 1650
Some ECs, really great recommendations. Only meaningful one I'd say was being president of the Deaf Culture Club.

So chance/enlighten/scoff at me. Thanks!

the transfer process is long, tedious, difficult, and stressful. You will be applying the same way you did in high school, but with much more work on your hands and a tougher schedule(its what college is about). I am applying as a transfer student as well, but I would strongly encourage you to go to FIU and really give it a chance and try to like it. Going in thinking your gonna transfer isnt always the greatest way.

If you come to the decision that you really want to transfer, go for it. Work hard and get really good grades. Anything is possible with a solid first year at college, and sometimes whats more important than your grades is your desired major/fit. You must make a good argument for why a particular major or program at a college id good for you, and you have to make yourself stick out somehow from the typical transfer applicant that just wants to go to a better or more well known school.

I hope this helps

I’ll try to make the best of it, but its not what I had envisioned for myself. Granted, my high school record is a result of my own indifference and FIU is really my only option (can’t count on Sarah Lawrence waiting list). My ultimate goal is to be a writer and NYC seemed like the place to be. Also, I’m originally from new york and miami still isn’t my scene. Thanks for the reply, good luck on your transfer endeavors :).

go to community college for 2 years then transfer. Saves more money, gets you the same places you wanna go…

i did the 2 year cc thing and now I’m going to the University of Michigan. Get a stellar gpa (3.8+) over 60 hours of transferable credit hours and you will be surprised at the places you can go…

Well the nearest CC is Miami Dade and the reviews are not great. I know several people who have attended or are currently enrolled and none seem to like it, and those who do do so for the wrong reasons. I’m sure its not all bad, but I think FIU would at least look better on an application. Also, I think I could be challenged at FIU moreso than at CC.
