<p>Am I correct in assuming that commended scores vary state to state, just like national merit scores?</p>

<p>Commended scores do not vary from state to state. It is a national cutoff.</p>
<p>With regards to the avg. PSAT score going down this year, I honestly dont think it holds much weight when the statistics are analyzed.</p>

<p>As per the reports, the avg. scores (and std. deviation in brackets) in each section this year was:
CR - 47.0 (11.5)
M - 48.3 (11.4)
W - 45.9 (11.1)</p>
<p>Last year they were:
CR - 46.8 (11.6)
M - 48.9 (11.6)
W - 45.9 (11.3)</p>
<p>So as you can see the averages for each section stayed relatively the same. There was no sharp drop or increase in any of the avg. scores. This leads me to think the we won’t see any major difference in cutoffs. I honestly am expecting the Commended cutoff to be the same as last year–201.</p>

<p>I know semi finalists are notified in September. But I think both Commended and semi finalists get a letter February or March of Jr. year letting them know they are at least commended. At least thats what I remember reading somewhere on these forms. (I’m trying to find the exact post now…)</p>
<p>EDIT: Scratch that. It appears that students find out they are at least commended sometime in April of their Junior year.
