Hi, i am a junior in highschool and i got a 201 on my psat, do you think i am qualified for the commended requirement? if not, are there other scholarships that i could possibly qualify for? maybe for the university of texas or any scholarships?

I’m in the same boat. I got a 204 and I heard a rumor that they pick it by state, I live in MA and I heard you have to have a 221 to be commended from MA. I don’t know if this is true though. I got 98th percentile. So I would also like to ask tuttifrutti’s question

There is only ONE commended score and it’s for EVERY state. It is generally around 201-202.

As for scholarships, if you don’t make NMSF/F, your chances for scholarships will now largely depend on your ACT or SAT scores.

So suppose the cut off for the finalists is 215 in my state, does that mean that everyone who got 215 or higher is a semifinalist?

tutti…Anyone who meets or exceeds the cutoff score for a particular state becomes a Semifinalist. Following the Semifinalist notification in the fall of their senior year, there is an application process (short essay, official transcript, paperwork from student and school, sending of SAT score, etc.) before Finalist status can be awarded in February of the student’s senior year.

As mentioned by others, the individual state cutoff scores are for Semifinalist status. For Commended status, there is one national score cutoff (normally around 201). I haven’t heard of any guaranteed scholarships for Commended students, although it is a nice achievement to list on your applications as part of an overall resume.

*So suppose the cut off for the finalists is 215 in my state, does that mean that everyone who got 215 or higher is a semifinalist? *

Yes.

But, if that’s the cutoff for this last year, you don’t know what it’s going to be for next year. Cutoffs can go up or down several points each year. Typically they only swing up to 2 points, but some states will occasionally have 5 point swing.

That said, in the past, the highest cut-off has been 223…so anyone with a 223 or higher in any state has made NMSF.
