PSAT: math section

Does anybody have suggestion on books or any tips on how to improve on the math sections of the PSAT?????????

Practice, practice, practice! It got me an 80.

What book did you study from. The word problems are not my strong points and I want to improve on that.

In our school the best practice was the actual test. If you were in the top 5% of scorers on the state standardized tests the school pays for you to take it in 9th and 10th grade. By the time you take it for real you'll at least be familiar with it. Many people don't give any importance to it, but if you score well enough to be semifinalist there's money to be had, more or less depending on the school you intend to go to. If it's too late for that, try to get a sample test and do it using the same time constraints they give you in the actual test. It may mean $1k/year for 4 years. Not bad for a morning's worth of work.

Get the Official SAT Study Guide (blue book or bb around here). The SAT has a few Alg II questions that don't appear on the PSAT, but this is the only book with actual CB questions (some are even recycled from old PSATs). You can also order old PSAT booklets from the CB.

So what kind of math is on the PSAT??

It's virtually identical to the SAT in content with the exception of 2-3 problems:

From the CB:

The math section of the PSAT/NMSQT requires a basic knowledge of number and operation; algebra and functions (though not content covered in third-year math classes--content that will appear on the new SAT); geometry and measurement; and data analysis, statistics, and probability. You can use a calculator to answer math questions, but no question on the test requires a calculator.

Does anyboby know the cutoff score for VA??

According to this thread it was 219 in VA for 2007 PSAT. It changes every year.

Man i wished i lived in WV their cutoff score is low. They are so lucky. How many math question is there per section?

Two 25-minute sections on the PSAT. One is all multiple choice with 20 questions. The other has 8 grid-ins and 10 MC. This is just like the SAT, except the SAT has an additional 20 minute math section with 16 MC.

Is there any special math books for the PSAT or SAT?

Official SAT Study Guide is the place to start. Available in any bookstore or at Amazon.com for $12. Best source of questions. If you need a coaching book, there are hundreds. A good starting point is Princeton Reviews Cracking the SAT.
