PSAT National Merit Competition

I just wanted to verify the importance of earning the title of a semifinalist. Do colleges look highly upon the winners?

It’s a national award you could note in your college applications. Some schools give scholarships to semifinalists.

Some of those scholarships are significant. <a href=“NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation - #916 by imaresqd1 - National Merit Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/649276-nmf-scholarships-an-updated-compilation-p62.html</a></p>

How about just the title of becoming a semi-finalist? Do top colleges look favorably upon applicants who are semi-finalists?

It’s minor. Its a component of testing, but your SAT/ACT are much more important.

15000/16000 NMSFs make it to NMF. Some of the 1000 that fall out just don’t complete the paperwork (probably because they’re attending a college that doesn’t care about NMF). The remainder usually have some kind of issue like discipline or bad HS grades. If you make NMSF you will most probably make it to finalist.
