I’m trying to understand the process. My S19 has a SI of 223. The expected cutoff for NY is 221. So I’m guessing we are good.
(1) To move on in the process beyond NMF, how high of a SAT score do you need to have? He has a 1490 on the SAT - is that enough? Should he take it again? He is planning on using his ACT score (34) for the actual applications.
(2) Are there other scholarships that are based on the PSAT score, do you apply or do they automatically receive your score? Where can I find info on that?
This IS our first rodeo - not sure how all of it works.
(2) You need to apply AND list that school as your #1 choice on your NM portal after you are NMF. Certain colleges are known to offer very large scholarships the NMF you need to check with each school individually about their CURRENT scholarship they change every year. Some schools are known for full ride/almost full ride UCF, UTD, TTU other schools known for good NM scholarships TAMU, UA, UAH, OU - there are many more… FL is changing their rules for state schools (and UM) to attrack more OOS NM so you might want to look into that too. You will not find NM scholarships at tippy top schools.

The confirming score will be computed as a selection index and will probably be a bit lower than the as-yet-unknown Commended. That Commended number should be available in March sometime but NMSC doesn’t announce it. You can call them and they will let you know, and it’ll show up on Art’s website (currently predicted to be 212). Anything at this min or higher is in the clear - you don’t need to match your SAT to your PSAT performance.
The way the SI is calculated is as follows: If his EBRW is 740 and Math 750, then you double the EBRW, add Math and divide the sum by 10 so (740*2 + 750)/10. That’s an “SI” of 223, well above the minimum. You can take his actual SAT test scores and figure out his SI but @3scoutsmom is correct, if his composite is 1490 then he should be fine.
@homerdog - 212 was listed as “most likely” by Art at CompassPrep. Hoping the state cutoffs he listed as “most likely” fall in line as well. Hopefully he updates his blog soon as I find his insight very helpful. S19 is on the bubble - one point above 2018 CO cutoff so we are in for long wait till September.
Thanks to all who contacted NMSC to get the commended. This news confirms that my S19 will very likely remain a couple points below the cut-off for our state so no surprises and no stress (for us). Good luck to all hoping for good news this September!
@kesari Sorry to hear that! States like NJ and California, along with the Washington DC region have insanely high cutoffs… this year in NJ, a 1490 may not make the cutoff. It’s insanely difficult (compared to states like Montana or North Dakota).
