I am a sophomore (I know I shouldn't be worrying, but I am so bare with me) and last year after taking all honors classes I have a 3.9 unweighted average. This year I am taking all honors classes and I have a single -A. I have been varsity in XC, indoor track, and outdoor track since my freshmen year. I am a member of several clubs, and am a very good double bassist. I am the trombone section leader of my band and a drum major. I am an all state debater. I recently took the PSAT's and so did my slacker brother. Why is he getting more college mail than me. We both get it from respectable schools but not bad ones. Why.

I’m not sure if the amount of college mail recieved is an accurate indicator of academic ability. I’m a junior in HS and I’ve taken the PSAT twice and did well (189) but my gpa is only a 3.25 UW ( althogh I have taken plenty of APs). Yet I’ve been getting mail from every Ivy school (a ton). Why? I’m guessing it’s because I’m a URM (black) and colleges just love to recruit minorities. Does that mean I have a shot there. Not very likely, I’m kind of a slacker. So it’s possible that your brother probably filled some bubble on the test that’s probably letting him get more mail than you, but Im not 100% sure. Either way it’s nothing to be concerned about. ;)

College mail is spam, and the PSAT doesn’t really count. Calm down, sophomore.

No you didn’t.

217 is considered good, and yeah only crappy college send college mail, the good ones don’t need advertising, I throw all the letters out without even looking at them, wish they didn’t rape trees just to spam me.

^ Lol potato harsh

@Francaisalamatt

He’s got it. They send mail to every PSATer, even those who scored like a 100. They know your going to get your jittery at the mail and apply. More applications=lower acceptance rate=Better reputation. God they’re brilliant huh.

The wonderful world of marketing.

And @shush, good colleges send mail too. I found out about my ED school (Reed College) through their mail, and I’ve gotten stuff from UChicago, Swarthmore, Grinnell, Dartmouth, Princeton, etc. Of course, whether or not I took any of it too seriously is a different question. Haha I just throw mine away too; I feel so bad, but I don’t WANT any more.

@purplepotatoe, Well that was a stab at the heart…

I know a 189 isn’t that impressive, but then again it was my Sophomore year.

Considering that you’re a URM, a 189 on your sophomore PSAT is impressive. I commend you for your achievement.

@purplepotato, That was one of the most ignorant posts I have ever read. Believe it or not, outside of CC, 189 on the PSAT (during sophomore year) is an excellent score.

I’m sure you’ve seen worse.

Still, that was pretty harsh. Sure, 189/240 isn’t stellar, but it’s not bad at all.

@purplepotatoe “Considering that you’re a URM”?

^Yeah, what’s that supposed to mean?
