PSAT Scores for Sophomore

Dang MichiganGeorgia, you’re way out of college and you have a son, but you’ve posted on here over 1,000 times.

@charlucas 197 is a great score. I scored 201 my freshman year, got 235 this year (stupid mistake on math cost me the 240). This is with no preparation → the increase is natural

@MichiganGeorgia: I’m also thinking my kiddo should take the SAT during fall or January of junior year b/c of the change. I’m thinking the ACT will see a big bump in popularity that year b/c it’s a known quantity.
@d4rkjoker, awesome improvement! my kid should be so lucky!

@Fivefour - My oldest son goes to Georgia Tech and I have a 9th grader and a 7th grader. I know it seems like a lot of posts but trust me… some of the information I’ve gather from here helped my son decide were to go to college. Believe it or not there are a lot of parents on this site too! It’s kind of like facebook. :)

Huh, I didn’t know that. Coincidentally, the college I want to go to is Georgia Tech.

@wuwenhan021550 –
i got online to check out info on psat scores for my sophomore daughter – who got a 186 like yours.

i want to push her to do well next year… and i would like her to make the NM cutoff for our state. ouch – that’s a big jump. i know it comes down to her, but i’m going to help her find a the resources.

have you heard or seen much about increasing scores from your school or teachers? your thoughts? i think you’re right – its a good score, not outstanding, but with potential. right?

FiveFour - yes, 197 is very good for a sophomore, you are on track for NMS but as all above said it will require dedicated prep - and the amount you have to improve varies dramatically based on your state, and can range from about 204 to 223. You asked for an honest answer about why you would be in the 96th percentile as a sophomore based on being one of the best in your school. Based on what I’ve seen on this forum and heard from others, I definitely think there are alot of schools with much higher scores. My D (who was NMF) goes to what would be described as a low performing school and they had 3-4 sophomores over 200 in a class of 500 (with ultimately only 2 kids making NMS). My niece goes to a very high performing HS and they had multiple kids who had already made the NMS cut-off as freshman in a class of 500 and average about 30 NMS per year. I would estimate they have 20-30 kids over 200 in each sophomore class. This is NOT to discourage you - your score is excellent and if you keep working you have an excellent chance at NMS, just wanted to give you the honest assessment you asked for about your competition nationally. You also mentioned that Pre-Cal was the highest level of math available at your school? I am assuming this is the highest that is available to you as a sophomore?
