All Juniors, as far as I know, take the PSAT during the beggining of their Junior year. If one earns the National Merit Award, does that help in the admissions process? Is it difficult?

National Merit Award helps in the admissions process. My son got wonderful merit aid by being a National Merit Finalist. The merit aid varies from school to school (some don't give anything and some give a lot of merit aid). Study for the PSAT this summer.

whats merit aid
bump

ArtOfMind_21, merit aid is scholarship money that is granted based on academic performance. This can include music, schoolwork, etc. but yeah, a handful of schools will give great merit aid to national merit finalists.

Is the PSAT similar to the SAT?

Sorry for what may be a dumb question.

The PSAT is exactly what its name implies. It's a preliminary SAT - a shorter version. It doesn't include the essay, but it tests you on math, critical reading, and writing skills. If you get a score of 220 or above (it varies by state), you're qualified to receive scholarship money. If you're selected as a finalist, you get that money.

^^^^^^Essentially, it is a "practice" SAT that determines National Merit awards. It is similar to the SAT as it has reading, english, and math on it, but does not have a writing section and is much shorter.
