PSU Class of 2018 Admission Decision Thread

@ronboy72 i don’t want to go into sports management, but journalism instead! which was somewhat unfortunate considering my MCAS (MA standardized testing) scores awarded my free tuition to UMASS, but their programs didn’t fulfill what i wanted in a program!! plus, my dad who’s been in broadcast journalism for 30+ yrs was picky with programs as well :P

Here is a question I hope someone can answer:

If I call and ask to be reevaluated for UP if I change to undergraduate studies or undecided (I was very likely right on the edge), could I still elect to go to my local branch after they accept me to UP?

I definitely an interested in changing my intended field from astronomy/physics to undecided, but I’m not entirely sure if I would go to UP. It’d have to be a big discussion with my family. But I would like to have the option of choosing to start at the branch even if accepted to UP.

If you are accepted to UP, are you also accepted to your alternate branch too? Does it work like that?

@hop
Certainly sounds like you should be a lock for PSU! Good luck.

@momofboys727 what were his stats to be concidered for reevaluation because in my case they just said you do not meet the cirteria for main campus even with a major change.

Alright I got an email back from them saying that they updated my status to allow summer session also. After I got the email, my status had been to final days. They said they will evaluate me for fall first, so exicited

3.8 GPA UW (AP and Honors Classes)
1810 SAT

He is in the top 10%. President of his senior class, President of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. President of the Quiz Team. Homecoming King. He is involved in baseball, wrestling and football. He is a two year captain of the football team where he earned local and regional MVP awards.

@sr1995 I got accepted to that program at up

@momofboys727 ~ I’m really excited that it all worked out for your son! He really deserved UP.

Congrats to all that made it! Remember, for those that were not accepted if you really want to attend PSU at UP you can always reapply the following semester or year.

I applied to Penn State Main in November, before the priority date. Online it said everyone that applied before that date would be notified of a decision by the end of January. Because of an issue with my last name, it took two months for PSU to get my SATs. All of my friends that applied at the same time as me already have the “coming days” message or acceptance. Did I get pushed back to the Regular applications because of the issue with my SATs? Did anyone have a similar situation?

Stats:
SAT: 1910 (680 reading, 600 math, 630 writing)
SAT IIs: didn’t send them to PSU
GPA: 3.88/4
Rank: my school doesn’t rank
Other stats: 4 on AP English exam last year, taking AP Economics (micro and macro), Spanish and Literature this year.

Subjective:
Essays: it was about a controversial issue at my school that my newspaper staff overcame
Teacher Recs: my marketing teacher who is like a second mother to me and my English teacher who really made my year amazing. They were really great, I’m assuming.
Counselor Rec: my school is huge so my guidance counselor doesn’t know many kids well, but he knows me very well. I’m sure it was fantastic as I am very involved.
Hook (if any): national DECA competitor (marketing club) and secretary of the club, president of FBLA (future business leaders of America), vice-president of SADD (students against destructive decisions), editor-in-chief of the newspaper, a lot of other little things I’ve done. My resume is my strong point.

Location/Person:
State or Country: New Jersey
School Type: large, top ranked public school
Ethnicity: white (entirely Irish)
Gender: female

Other Factors: can’t really think of anything else but ask if you have any questions!
General Comments: PSU was never one of my top schools but the more I think about it the more I like it. Smeal is pretty competitive so I’m really proud to have been accepted! I’ll be a Marketing major, by the way.

My D, called up the admissions board, and changed her major to undecided and now, they’re reviewing her for the Summer program at University Park. I hope she gets in there now. How long will it take them to decide again? Is it possible they put her back into Hazelton or will she just be rejected?

@hopmayer We’re also from MA and daughter got a full tuition waiver by dint of high MCAS scores, too. However people have told us the waiver applies to tuition only, not fees. To wit, the UMassAmherst “tuition” is only $857 (or thereabouts) a semester. The remainder of the nearly $7K per-semester cost is fees. That makes UMass’ largesse a bit underwhelming. It also rankles me that they trumpet the “free tuition” in a misleading way. I’ll bet some financially strapped MA students think they’re getting a free ride at their home university, and don’t apply elsewhere in time, only to find out that they’ll face a hefty college bill after all. Even if they end up with a UMass in-state cost that’s half the typical out-of-state tuition elsewhere, it’s still a sneaky ploy.
And btw GOOD LUCK for the Penn State journalism program. Your stats sound great and I can’t imagine they won’t want you. Having worked in Pennsylvania newspapers alongside Penn State grads for a decade in my younger days, I can vouch they’re a talented and well-trained bunch.

Does anyone here have experience with the summer program? I’m deciding whether or not I want to do it. I’ve been accepted to fall, but I feel like I’m falling behind on the social aspect of the school if I don’t start until fall. Anyone here have any advice on what I should do or how it would work? Thanks!

@MummyOfCollegian We are from Mass too. I think the whole thing is a deceptive rip off. I know of some financial needy families too that thought their kid won the big ticket. Both my girls won the so"called “John and Abigail Adams Scholarship.” I was pleased only because it looked good on the college applications for other schools. One of my daughters applied EA and got in. (Not going) D2 did RD and has not heard yet, but she’ll get in …but it does not matter she already got into so much better schools so far…like PSU!!! I think kids need to be further away from home to get the real college experience, Zoo Mass is only an hour away.

… Also @hopmayer did you try Emmerson or Neuhouse at Syracuse?

@plumstead12
did your daughter’s picture go to up
and wat does the status say?

I’m from MA too. I applied to Umass only because of the mcas scholarship I was awarded only to find out that it was nothing.

So when I called, they changed my major from Smeal at UP to just DUS at UP. My picture went from the Nittany Lion back to the UP Picture. They said i’d hear back within 2 weeks, however when my status changed back from the rejection, it went directly to the “coming days” status.

Does anyone know if i’ll be finding out in the actual “coming days” status time (3 days) or if it will stick to this for a week or so until they make a second decision?

My stats from Smeal Reject:

3.6 GPA
31 ACT
Very good ECs/Teacher Recs
Grad. Class of 1,400 students (Competitive Top 15 NY State school)

@twinmom2014 i did apply to emerson! my dad is an alum and majored in broadcast journalism! the sole reason i didn’t do 'cuse is because i am the unhappiest camper in the cold. today’s snow day was a blessing!! still no change on “reviewing my credentials”… oy.

@dsdude
i have the same thing too exactly
i hope this means we both have a chance to get in ( u prob more likely than me)

@blob

hopefully we both get in!
