PSU Class of 2021 Decision Thread

I was rejected from college of engineering at UP and asked to be reevaluated about 3 weeks ago for DUS. The admissions councilor emailed me back and said that switching into DUS or any other major would not change my chances of getting into UP. I was offered 2+2 for Erie but I really want UP. Does anyone know ANYTHING I could do to possibly get into UP??

@EngineerWannaB7 Short answer…no. I went back to look at some of your old threads to view your stats. With a 3.1 GPA that is almost ALWAYS a deferral to a commonwealth campus, regardless of your major. DUS is not a catch all…it doesn’t mean that low stats get in. The stats for DUS acceptance are only lower than majors such as Engineering and Smeal. They are similar for many other majors. A 3.1 GPA is a commonwealth campus acceptance. There is nothing you can do at this point. I will say that 60% of students that graduate from UP start at a commonwealth campus. Altoona is the closest commonwealth and the one that has the most engagement with UP due to its close proximity. It is also a really pretty campus with about 4000 students.

I’m sorry you didn’t get into UP - it’s a very difficult school to get into. But a PSU degree is very valuable, so consider the 2+2 option.

@MYOS1634 what is Paterno Scholars/econ

http://www.la.psu.edu/current-students/undergraduate-students/paterno-fellows

thanks @bodangles and what are the advantages to doing so???

@jackoneill my JD is in fellows and is an econ major. and btw, because of fellows she got into schreyers honors college as a sophomore (end of year). she was aspiring as a freshman (any lbral arts can aspire) and inducted as a sophomore. Let me know if you have any questions. if i dont know the answers im sure she would. she lived on a fellows floor in east freshman year and honors housing sophomore year. you must double major or major and minor. there are courses you must take and, she has to write a research paper, she said its a challenge and not sure she would do it again, but i think thats only because it takes her away from her work on THON that she loves!.

The biggest advantages are stronger foundations in key classes; smaller, more interactive, less impersonal classes your first year ; and priority registration (which anyone who doesn’t have it will tell you is worth its weight in gold.) Plus ‘enrichment funds’ Ie.,scholarships for study abroad and research, and free lunch meetings, free lunches…

is it possible to join the honors program as a sophomore?

In paternal fellows…yes. You have to meet the criteria and your in. It’s a gateway to honors. PF is only for liberal arts majors.

Question on merit $$ for those who have gone through the process. I was accepted in January but no talk of any merit $$. I realize that PSU gives out very little $ but my question is when do you find out that information? Is it done in March like other schools? If so how is it communicated to a student? Luckily I have been accepted at 2 of my top choices so far and am just waiting on merit $$ to see if it’s a meaningful difference.

We haven’t received anything yet. If I recall correctly, its sent out in late March.

Both of my sons received Provost Scholarships while we are attending a special invite only For the Glory Admitted students weekend. We are still waiting to hear about Schreyer Honors College acceptance.

I was accepted in to the college of engineering (majoring in chemical engineering) @ university park on 1/26  I’m very new at this so here’s my stats
I’m a white female from MD
ACT: 28 (32 M, 27 E, 26 R, 25 S)
GPA: 88.04 (I go to a very prestigious first tier private school that barely weights for honors and AP’s)
AP Physics (11) AP Calculus (12) AP Chem (12)

I also think I should state that I took regular calculus last year so prepare me for AP (very helpful, I highly recommend it) I’m also taking statistics this year cause I like math.

My EC’s are harp, choir, and varsity swimming

I think it’s funny because I didn’t choose an alternate campus, and I would not consider starting in the summer, AND I applied on 12/28 honestly you’ll never know until you find out.
BUT IDK IF I AM GOING HERE BC I ALSO GOT ACCEPTED TO VIRGINIA TECH YESTERDAY (2/20, didn’t apply until 12/30 for that school…) FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING AND IDK WHERE I AM GOING AND THOSE WERE MY TOP 2 CHOICE SCHOOLS BUT YEAH SEE YA GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

D was waitlisted today :frowning: Journalism
GPA - UW 3.95; W-3.8
SAT - new - 1230 - 600M; 630 R

7 APs; the rest honors classes.
Many academic honors

Great EC’s including Editor school paper; English tutor; 4 year varsity sports (3 seasons)

She’s really disappointed. Offered a spot at any branch for 2+2, but we are OOS and she really wanted UP.

Is it worth her calling to be considered for DUS? Have’t seen any mention of what the options are for waitlist.

When did she apply? If after 11/30, that’d be a reason - after the priority deadline it’s on a space available basis. Yes you can call and ask for DUS but I think those spots are nearly filled already.
I agree that 2+2 from oos is not worth it. Does she have affordable acceptances?

@MYOS1634 - do students ever ask to be reconsidered for College of Liberal Arts? Or is it only DUS?

No, you can ask to be reconsidered for liberal arts and I think they still have spots.

@MYOS1634 Thank you. I will have her call in the morning.

Have her look carefully at the majors. I think BA communication and SODA might match her interests best depending on what she planned on studying in the college of communication.

Haha…funny thing is…she really wants to study Criminology; but her HS strengths were in Journalism…many EC’s in writing. So she went that route, with the plans of changing majors…guess that backfired!
