What was your top choice?

You guys are eagerly waiting for admission while I Haven’t even applied yet ill apply sometime next week and by the way is MSU good for business.I got admission in 3days with 5k scholorship but I still want to go to penn state badly.I hope I get in atleast through summer

For all of you agonizing–and, believe me, I know how hard it is to wait–keep in mind that at this point last year, we were only on p.10 of what was to become a 65-page thread. Aside from very high-stats kids who applied before the priority deadline and were accepted rather quickly, I believe most students reporting on CC received their decisions after the New Year. So try not to lose heart!

If you fall into the range of students admitted and you are not applying to a very competitive program, I’m guessing the news will be good when you finally get it. And, if you end up getting bad news, I think it’s worth sharing that last year a lot of disappointed kids contacted admissions directly and expressed their willingness to either start in the summer or switch to DUS, and MANY were met with happier decisions. I don’t know how common this is in other years, but it was a pretty significant number last year, in my opinion.

And for those unfamiliar with Penn State’s admissions stats in general, this summary might be helpful:

how are you guys receiving information on merit scholarships? I got accepted in November and just accepted my offer today. is there someplace I should go to check? or will I receive a letter/ email?

@Foppa21 scholarships come out later, maybe in feb or march. From what ive heard and seen, Penn State barley gives out money and when they do its barely enough (maybe $4,000).

^ I know right. MSU accepted me in a day with 14,000 in grants and not a word from PSU

@5melissa1234 I never expected such a quick decision. What are your stats and I’m atleast happy that I have a back up.is MSU a good university

I have a 3.7 (W) , 27 ACT, 4 years varsity sports, 300 hours community service, 2 internships, and other leadership opportunities. Are you thinking of considering the offer? @ind1900

@5mellissa1234 well its my backup actually. If i get into penn state, purdue or virginia tech I would definetly go there or else I may go to michigan state. Even though michigan is good in academics. I have few cons against it 1.I live in india the seasons here are hot, hotter and even hotter and michigan is supposed to be very cold so I may strugle a lot and one more thing I’ve heard is that it’s a bit unsafe other than these reasons Msu is perfect for me. I’m top 50 in tennis in
the country so I’m planning to try for the athletic team.My sat is 1810 and where are you plannning to apply to??

@ind1900 It’s a backup for me also. It’s a great school but I didn’t like the campus setting much. I applied to FSU, Alabama, Baylor, Pittsburgh, MSU, Michigan, Penn State, Syracuse. I’ve been accepted to all except deferred at Michigan. I’m waiting to hear back from Penn State and Syracuse

Wishing all of you on CC a Happy New Year, and wishing good news in the upcoming weeks to all who are still patiently waiting…

Good luck to all you peeps! I was excited when I heard my acceptance because I do love the university and would have no problem attending it even if it was a safety for me. To be honest I think that the admissions is more holistic than a 2/3 GPA and 1/3 SAT’s, though it is stated on their website. My GPA wasn’t the greatest, it was a 3.7 at the time of admissions and now it is a 3.76, but my SAT and ACT were pretty good: a 2250 and 33. Though speculative, I think that the reason why PSU’s admissions are so wonky are because of their inability to keep true to their formula. If they see someone with a 2300 applying after priority but have an applicant with an 1800 who applied before priority, they are probably going to make a quick decision about the 2300. I know when I was applying a lot of the comments spoke about quicker decisions given to those with higher SAT’s and ACT’s, and I found this to be true with me. After submitting my application in, my decision was received after a week and a half. However, I urge you all to still have hope. You will receive your decisions and I am sure there is still plenty of room to be filled at the campus.

I was wondering if anyone knew when you hear about summer session. I am defiantly on the bubble and I put down summer session to increase my chances. Will they say by January 31st if I am in or not? or do they fill those spots later?
edit
@fcallicotte So you applied after November 30 and already have a decision? That’s crazy! Congratulations! That’s awesome for you - but you are correct in that is “wonky” indeed. I think PSU should stick to a priority date if they are going to go to the trouble of having one. It makes no sense to me to have a priority deadline and then accept people who apply after the deadline before people who applied before it. If they have a priority deadline, they should make decisions on all of those applicants before they move on. Just my opinion. Your GPA and SAT’s were good so it’s no surprise you got in, and certainly not your fault they decided on your application so fast! That is terrific for you and my frustration is not at all with you of course, but with the PSU admissions process that makes no sense. Penn State should just really not call the admissions process “rolling” or have a priority deadline that is meaningless…If they didn’t do that, they would not have so many students and parents stressed out and worrying about why some have heard before they have.
My D did speak with someone in admissions prior to the holiday break and they told her that the vast majority of applicants that applied prior to Nov 30, hear in January - so you are correct in that there is plenty of room left. Nearly all of the room is left as many people apply far into March and get accepted! Congrats again…you will love PSU if you attend. It’s a great school - I am just not a fan of the admissions process! My D applied September 2nd…so you can see why
@DeMichLis81 If you applied by November 30th, regardless of starting semester (summer or fall), you will hear by January 31st. They will first evaluate you for fall. If they can’t put you in fall, they will evaluate you for summer (if you selected summer evaluation) and if they can’t put you in summer, they will offer you a branch (if you put a branch campus back up).
It does make sense. They want the best possible applicants. No where were we promised a “first come, first served” waiting line type process. What if a high majority of the early applicants were marginal candidates, and those people kept the school from the getting the very best applicants it could because they simply queued up first? What if the early applicants were largely not qualified, as a group? They, the school, have to guard against that. So let’s all continue waiting and hoping for the outcome each of us wants, and let’s take comfort that statistically slightly more than half will get what they want. And let’s also know that about 45% of the kids will be denied. You can adjust your probabilities on two factors almost exclusively: GPA and standardized test scores. You know the numbers, and hence you know your (or your child’s) chances. There are several sites with goo predictive tools (College Prowler and Parchment are just two examples). I’ve found the predictive tools did a good job with our kids, and we’ve put in lots of applications accordingly, following the guidance on three categories of schools etc. Good luck to all, and remember, there are a lot of really good schools you can get in to if PSU is your target, and you can and will do great at any of them.
