I plan on majoring in chemical engineering and I've been researching both Penn State and University of Maryland trying to figure out which one is better in this field. If anyone has any information I would really appreciate it!

If neither University is in your state then I recommend University of Maryland College park.

I am from Maryland and have a handful of friends that go to Penn state and College park for engineering.

My college park friends are a lot happier with the professors and campus life. Penn state is known as a big party school in the area. Maryland on the other hand does have its fair share of partying but by no means is a party school, the atmosphere is just a lot more academic.

Chemical engineers that graduate from Maryland have excellent job opportunities, especially from pharmaceutical companies.

I’m from PA, but I really like University of Maryland. Penn State’s party school reputation does scare me a little, although I’m not totally against it. Thanks for the info! This is a really hard decision for me.

With the current drama involving the PSU board of trustees I am currently advising people to look elsewhere if they are unsure - the BOT is in damage control mode, which means they are going to control the damage so that it hits everyone else and not them. I simply cannot guarantee that the PSU you attend a few years from now is anything like the PSU everyone currently knows.

I am fully aware of the situation and Penn State and I know I will definitely consider it in my decision but I’m most interested in bottom line which has the better program.

Go where it is most economical for you and make sure you check out the internship/job placements as well. I know a lot of good companies do recruit at PSU for chemical engineering students.

Just my 2 cents but Univ of Delaware is highly ranked for Chem engineering. You might put it on your list.
